Hi
I recently got accepted into the University of California Davis as an prospective undergraduate student. I was happy about it until i found out that there are serious campus safety problems in the university, especially between Muslims and Jews. I also heard that the administrators and chancellors are slow in solving and responding to these problems, and that the number of hate crimes are on the rise. My question is: is UC Davis really safe for students? Or is it very easy to get into problems and be a target of hate crimes because of your religious preferences?
Thank you very much
Crime on campus and in the surrounding community is very low for a community that size. The school is tolerant to a fault. This was an isolated incident, I wouldn’t worry a bit.
Agree with @NCalRent: Older son is a current student at UCD and feels the campus is very safe. He finds the students very friendly and has never encountered any intolerance other than the publicized incident you refer to in your post. No worries and congrats on being an Aggie!!
Daughter is a rising senior at Davis and loves it there. She rides her bike when she doesn’t use the student run bus services. I think other UCs probably have many more incidents than Davis. The students appear to be very happy there. It’s a great school!
California in general is known as one of the more tolerant and open states in the country. UC Davis is also known as a relatively open and welcoming campus, as well as offering a high-quality education. I cannot speak to the recent incident, but I don’t think it is a good gauge of the overall atmosphere. It sounds like you are an international, and it is probably a good idea to attend UC Davis if it is your best offer.
Thanks everyone, I am feeling better about UCD already!!!
