Saint Mark's Schhol (Southborough, MA)

Please feel free to ask any questions about the Saint Mark's School if you are interested in the school or if you want to apply to the school.

Does it offer merit scholarships?

No, it doesn’t. Most of BS do not offer merit scholarship.

is it easier to get accepted as a sophomore, than as a freshmen???

What does St. Marks mainly look at in an applicant? For example maybe good at math, or science…

How good is the St. Marks soccer team??

It is not easy to tell which is easier to get accepted. But I know they add about 20 students at 4th form(sophormore) to the existing about 65 freshmen. I don’t think they look at a specific academic strength. They look at transcripts, SSAT, recom, ect like other schools. If you are extremely good at a certain subject, I am sure you get a good attention. Of course, they look for some talented sports palyer. They have admission open house on Oct. 31 Students with special interests are encouraged to request meeting with specific program directors and coaches when scheduling the visit.

St. Mark’s mission statement:

Several times I have heard John Warren, the headmaster, describe the student body as students who are very smart, and nice, people who want to help others. I do think that they look for this.

They are apparently strong in some sports. Basketball? Sorry, I’m not a sports parent, so I’m no great help there. They have a large music program, which is surprising in a school of than 338 students–choir, 3 a capella groups, chamber orchestra and assorted chamber music groups, and a Jazz Band. The visual arts are strong. I’ve enjoyed seeing exhibitions of student artwork. There’s also a drama program, but I haven’t seen a production yet. Nevertheless, to support all these programs, talent in diverse areas must be a factor–as it is for many boarding schools.

Thank you so much for your responses.

I know I should already know this, but everyone is talking about application essays. In the application process, I read nothing about an application essay. Does St. Mark’s require application essays?

Also, how do St. Mark’s admission officers weigh the different parts of application? Do they weigh the SSAT more than recs? Or the EC’s more than teacher recs??

Also what is the acceptance rate, and the SSAT percentile.

On boarding school review, I read AR was 40%, and SSAT was 82%. Are these numbers accurate??

yes, you have to write an essay. I do not know how St. Mark’s admission officers weigh the different parts of application. Who knows?

I heard from the admission officer that the acceptance rate was 29% last year and 30% this year, and the SSAT average is 82%.

How do I find out what the essay should be about?
Will they tell me about it in the interview, or is it online? How long should the application essay be?

The essay is a part of application. The application form is online, and you can apply online as well. In the part Three, they ask you to provide a photocopy of an original graded English or history essay that you submitted during this academic year which
includes your teacher’s comments. and they ask you to answer one of the four questions using a separate sheet of paper. Your essay should be carefully thought out, well-organized, and clearly written or typed. Visit the school admission section of the website.

My son is also at St-Marks. As they are a small, co-ed school, they are not as strong in some sports but they are known for their basketball. The varsity soccer team is doing well this year but I do not know if that is typical. My son is loving it.

There seems to be a wide variety of students so I do not think that it is easy to answer your questions as to what they look for but as periwinkle stated, kindness and talents seem to come up in many conversations with the staff. Of the few boys we know well who were accepted, there are students of varying SSAT success so that is certainly not their main criteria but they all have interesting talents to bring to the school and great letters of recommendation so perhaps that is part of the key.

thank you very much

Can international students be granted financial-aid like native students?

Apple Bom, I don’t know. I suggest you send an email to their director of financial aid. You can find his address on this page: [St. Mark’s School: Admission Tuition and Payment](http://www.stmarksschool.org/admission/tuitionpayment.aspx).

Middlesex, you may apply online, download an application from their website, or contact them to request an application by mail. If you’re international, you may prefer to apply online.

when will St. Marks start to offer Chinese?

are there any robotic team/club/program there? I know they have a good math program.

Thanks.

1) They were going to start offering Chinese last year and searched a Chinese lanuage teacher last year. However, they could’n’t find a right candidate (the candidate should not only teach Chinese but
also should lead a certain program) and the economy cilimate
suddenly became bad. I think they will reactivate that plan pretty soon since economy is getting better these days. You can ask when
you have a chance to visit SMS.

2) I do not know about robotic team. But they have a good math program called Math Institute run by a college professor. The members of the institure are very smart kids. The program is excellent! And also I heard that the Biology research program in DNA is outstanding as well.

Apple Bom: Yes international students can get financial aid…
FayMom: Sorry but I also do not know about the robotics team but the math program in very good and the math teachers seem to be excellent.!

Is that right? : international students can get financial aid.
