Saint Micheal's College

Hello everyone,

I recently got a letter in the mail from Saint Michael's College. I have never heard of the college before. Does anyone know how well-known this college is? Also, how is the political science department? I was curious about the honors program as well. Do you apply to the program? What is the average GPA (weighted and unweighted) and SAT score for those accepted into the program?

Thanks

So I’m actually going to SMC this fall for Poli Sci. I can’t tell you first hand how great it is but I’ve talked to the Dept. Professors several times and I get a very open vibe from them. It would seem that like most places, it’s as good as you make it. So if you are driven, the resources will carry you to great places. I’m also entering in Honors. They didn’t invite me at first but when I talked to them about it they were more than happy to accept me knowing I was interested enough to go out of my way. They do invite you once accepted, but if you inquire they will reconsider you.

And the one thing that amazes me about SMC is that every single person I have mentioned it to, without exception, knows someone who went there. It’s too small to be showing up on all sorts of school rankings and college guides, but it’s quite well established.

Hey there Number88–

We’re fairly well known within the New England & New York/New Jersey areas (more so in New England), but still, there are so many colleges in the northeast that there are always people who have never heard of us!

The [url=<a href=“http://www.smcvt.edu/academics/politicalscience/]political”>http://www.smcvt.edu/academics/politicalscience/]political science department /url is quite strong with plenty of internship opportunities. As a matter of fact, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Patrick Leahy, is a graduate of Saint Michael’s College and provides internships in his office for our students. Also, the class sizes are quite small and you will always be taught by a professor, never a teacher’s aid or graduate student.

Our Honors Program is one that students are invited to join. Once a student has applied to Saint Michael’s, the honors committee reviews each applicant’s transcript. They are looking for both the applicant’s performance as well as the level of class taken by the student (i.e. honors/AP/IB courses).

This past application cycle, students who had a 3.7 (weighted & on a 4.0 scale) and strong classes were invited into the honors program. Students must maintain a minimum of a 3.5 to remain in the program. If a student is not invited to the program, yet maintains a 3.5 or higher in their first semester, those students will be invited into the program.

Saint Michael’s College also was awarded a Phi Beta Kappa chapter (the nation’s oldest honor’s society). Fewer than 10% of colleges and universities in the US have been given this distinction. Phi Beta Kappa reviews a college/university’s curriculum, performance of the student-body and the quality of the faculty (10% of which are required to be Phi Beta Kappa members themselves).

I hope this answers all of your questions. If you have additional questions, please let me know!

Also DJQ1717- Welcome to St. Mike’s, thank you for weighing in!

Thanks!!!

The information was really helpful. My only question is how many people get internships with the senator?
