Currently, I’m a salutatorian after getting a B in my CALC BC class 1st semester. It is almost the end of 3rd quarter, and I had to get a 70 on the test in order to get a flat 90. (Class average is around 50.) And even if I did get a 90, I’m not confident I could repeat the same thing 4th quarter. Anyways, I’m not really interested in the title. I don’t want to go through the speech process + missing class just to lose my title on the last day of school.
I am thinking of emailing the Vice Principle, who is the coordinator of the graduation ceremony. However, I am a bit concerned of what my teachers would think of me. Is it okay for me to back out before grades even come out? If I email her, how should I phrase it?
Dear VP, Hi my name is __ and I’m currently a salutatorian Candidate. I would like to resign from my position? What???!? I feel like it’s awkward. Idk. Any help is appreciated Thank you!
I’m a fellow salutatorian who hates speech making! Except in my school rank is locked in after first semester senior year, so no chance of me falling back. I’d say, just suck it up and give a speech. Mine is probably going to be god awful in front of my 600 peers and their family, but I’m happy that I did so well and my family and friends would be disappointed if I just declined.
And who knows, maybe you’ll get a great story out of it for the grand kids… Something like, “so your grandma / grandpa worked really hard in school and got to give a speech at graduation, but while walking up the stairs, they fainted and broke both legs, good night (insert grandchild name)!”
Anyways, good luck!
