As many of your probably know, the new Clara in PIAZZA is still a student at Sam Houston State University - not a program I know at all - see, I DO know that you can get jobs and not be from a “top buzz” school… :)

Yeah, I had read about this casting elsewhere and say "good for her!!", not just which program she is from but getting cast as a lead on Bdway while in college and an unknown." Gives everyone on here hope....:D

I had the pleasure of seeing her performance and visiting with her about this amazing journey to Broadway, one that so many young performers dream about.

I'm planning to audition for the musical theatre program at SHSU... however, I can't find the audition requirements on the website! The section for MT program auditions hasn't been updated yet... and I really need to know what the requirements for these auditions are, as I'm working on getting all of my pieces together right now. Does anyone happen to know what Sam Houston asks for for songs, monologues, etc.? Or if not, what would be the best way for me to get this information?

The best way would probably be to call or e-mail someone in the musical theater department, but they may not have finalized it for this year since it is not on the web site. They may also be changing things, but two years ago I think the on-campus audition was in April and there was a dance audition first. I just remember it seemed awfully late in the year, and my daughter had already been accepted at OCU, so didn't audition at SHSU, but it was on her list. Sorry I'm not much help. My brain is old!

I've heard from a variety of sources (being that I live in the town in which Sam is located) that Sam has ranked somewhere in the top 10 schools for Musical Theatre. Has anyone heard the same or can you disprove it? Now, I can tell you that Sam has an awesome program. I participated in their youth play last summer (I played Homer in "Charlotte's Web"). I've come to know much of the staff and student body there. Penny Hossekester (I know I spelled that wrong), the theatre department chair, is a wonderful woman. Every spring, the MT department sends one of their students to my high school to choreograph our spring musical. I've seen many of their productions and they are simply amazing! The last show I saw was "Jesus Christ Superstar". They did a fantastic job. Their sets always look great. Their blackbox production of "A New Brain" had me laughing non-stop from beginning to end. Plus, the campus is gorgeous. There are many different things to do for students, mostly on campus, since Huntsville really isn't that great of a town :/ . There students make up half of the town's population!
