Sample Essay by Danny Lee
The one word “transition” certainly deeply reflects my life for I had to consistently travel. Moving back and forth between South Korea and China, and transferring to five different schools, I got to meet and interact with friends and adults with many different ideologies, cultural, and religious backgrounds. Being able to speak English, Korean, and Mandarin was the key ability to socialize with them, and from my realization of the significance of communication in a global, fast-changing society, I built a dream to become an M&A (mergers and acquisitions) dealer.
I have done many extra-curricular activities, such as going on the service trips, tutoring a refugees, interning at NGOs, but what was the most memorable and influential was my foundation of the school’s newspaper club. When I moved to a small school in Beijing in 2012, the school did not provide many opportunities for me, both in academic courses and extracurricular activities. Most notably, there were no clubs, especially newspapers club in a school of approximately 250 students and 50 faculty staff: so I immediately started working on my proposal to found a unique newspaper club.
Now the newspaper club produces many separate editions monthly for the school’s students, parents, and faculty. I spent countless nights watching the sun come up, numerous hours editing, assembling, and reviewing the materials. At first, as a sophomore, it was quite challenging to lead junior and senior staff writers; however, as time went by, I gradually learned the ins and outs of office politics. Now, in my third year as an editor-in-chief, I have set a firm infrastructure and system for this club. Due to high interest and deep love for this work, even if it meant that my GPA was at the bare minimum to get into university, I was willing to make a sacrifice for my experience in the newspaper club. When I have made it into the university of my choice, I hope to take a similar leadership role as a mediator to plan greater and more interesting projects. Leaving all my years of work behind may bring a tear to my eye, but with a little bit of good fortune I will find something to occupy myself.
All this leads to my choice of a career in business. As I mentioned earlier, by meeting outstanding people, and moving around to different areas and schools, I developed a love for the languages. I am fully committed to this field and am confident I can succeed.
Many of the aspects found in my new surroundings did not meet my needs nor my expectations but through one of the limited classes, like AP Economics class, I am learning about business administration and the laws that lay under the operation of today’s global society, which are essential to gaining insights and proper interpretation of the world economy. I am further aware of the highly prestigious standing the business programs at top universities offer and play in the shaping of the world economies. A university education will provide me with an unforgettable experience for a glimpse into the bigger world and is the perfect place for me to develop into an eminent M&A dealer.
