San Francisco Crime Levels

I’m not apologizing for SF, but it’s not unique. Portland and Seattle are great analogs.

And Vancouver, BC. The west coasts of both countries are in trouble.

Sad outcome of transit attack on a man (homeless I believe) threatening people on the NY subway. https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/04/us/new-york-subway-chokehold-death

Meh, not really: Crime In America: Study Reveals The 10 Most Unsafe Cities In 2022 (It’s Not Where You Think)

The west coast cities are actually safe relative to violent crime. It’s property crime where they top the charts.

That’s why this whole thread is a bit of a tempest in a teapot. Yes, drugs, shoplifting, car break-ins, and homelessness are bad, but violent attacks and murder are far worse in places like St. Louis.

Oh I agree. It’s the “the west coasts of both countries are in trouble” conclusion that doesn’t check out for me.

I guess it’s all in the eye of the beholder. I would rather navigate around 10 homeless people in San Francisco than walk around a city in a state that allows open carry. THAT would make me feel unsafe.

Murders are of interest only if you are in the demographic subgroup likely to be murdered; I am not.
I would rather avoid the drugs, shoplifting, break-ins and homelessness.

Might as well accurately assess one’s actual risk of crime/unpleasant encounters. Isn’t that what this thread is about?

This would suggest murders of lower socio economic or less educated people aren’t of interest to you. I wanted to give you a chance to clarify as I respect you and am often informed by your posts and can’t believe that was your intent.

Personally any loss of life to me is tragic and of interest.

As a matter of public policy, of course it is of interest and I support crime reduction and law enforcement fully. As a matter of assessing my personal risk in my daily activities, I never worry about being murdered because very very few women my age in any city in America are murdered.
Hope that clarifies it for you

Sadly, the CDC employee sitting in a Drs office waiting room yesterday wouldn’t have had reason to assess any risk of being murdered. Low probability. But ……

I hope that you support addressing any of the root causes of these social ills, rather than just trying to treat the symptoms. We can keep tossing people in jail for being mentally ill, unhoused, or addicted to drugs, but our society keeps creating these poor souls.

Yes, of course that is sad. But I will still go to the doctor, and am far more likely to die while driving there in a car accident than waiting in the office.
Many people over or under estimate the actual risks of everyday activities. Obviously there are always exceptions and random events do occur, but I generally find it best to assume the average statistics will likely apply to me.
My likelihood of being murdered in SF is close to zero. My likelihood of being hassled/ harassed while walking down the street in SF is significant.

But places like St. Louis are not destinations that tourists visit. And they have not had a downtown department store for decades.

What’s your definition of significant?

Why does it matter? Significant to me. Perhaps Significant to my daughter. Perhaps not to you. I assess it as Significant enough to take into account in my activities and plan accordingly. You likely have a higher tolerance so do not. Each person will assess it differently.
