My friend is undecided. Which would you pick and why?

@NCalRent She wants to study Biochemistry and her interest vary from running toooooooo idk. I think she’s a city girl but she says she wants to go to get away from drama etc
I find it hard to think of two more different cities in which to live. No offense intended, but you would not catch me dead in Merced/Fresno or anywhere near, and I cannot see a city girl wanting to be in the central valley rather than near Silicon Valley and San Francisco. I still think of UC Merced as a work in progress, although it did crack the US News & World Reports rankings of “national universities” this year. FWIW, that was with a 37/100 score while SJSU had a 47/100 in regional west universities. Your friend should do some research and determine which school is strongest in her area of interest.
If you want to get away from it all, then Merced is where to do it.
SJSU student here. I would recommend UCM…I love this school and we have some phenomenal attributes, but Chem isn’t one of them (at least from what I heard, people have said otherwise here: https://redd.it/674f1x)
I haven’t heard too much about it either, and I would imagine that UCM has the latest technology for that kind of major…but the school is just too new. If she’s into medical school, I would highly recommend UCM. Otherwise, it’s a toss-up. Plus from your diction, it seems like she would be sad of going to SJSU…I really don’t want that, please go to UCM in that case. I know it isn’t because of us, but rather the proximity.
If she wants to get away from it all and run, Merced is a good place to do both. Merced has little traffic, is a cheap place to live and is a short drive from the Central Sierra. If she has spent time on both campuses and doesn’t have a strong preference, i’d nudge her that way.
