Just joined tonite to find out more bout SCU. MY son received acceptance letter today to College of Engineering. UW GPA is 3.78, ACT is 33 with 36 in math. APs in CS, chem, stats, physics, calc, psych. Varsity and club sports and volunteering. He was also accepted to Fordham last month.

@anniemalfarm I really don’t know, SCU was one of my match schools and I’m pretty sad about being deferred. I had 2 C’s last year (in IB Chemistry and IB Biology) so I’m wondering if that really hurt me, but I’m still just confused because several students from my school in the exact same situation were accepted (with lower ACTs, GPAs, and several less ECs). When I visited last year, I fell in love with the place and really connected with the admissions officers.

Does anyone know if it’s an acceptable thing to call the admissions office and talk to them about it…? I just am curious about what my application weakness was so that I can potentially fix it before regular decision, and let them know that SCU is still one of my top choices. I don’t want to seem like I’m pestering them, however.

I’m certainly going to email my admissions rep and let him know my disappointment and confusion. Sucks to hear about so many kids getting in when SCU is their “safety” (aka, very low chance they attend) but others who SCU is their top choice meet the average stats and general profile have to wait 5 months to likely be denied

I was deferred as well. Pretty bummed right now. Does anyone know if people were rejected or they just deferred everyone that was not accepted?

I have posted below what the school said two years ago about EA acceptance rates, obviously the numbers may have moved since then and will depend in large part on how many apps they get regular admission. Given that numbers across the board seem to keep getting more competitive, we are assuming its not too likely at this point. Big bummer but as someone said earlier, gotta move on!

SCU received 4,400 Early Action applications and admitted about half and deferred about 1/3. Students who were deferred are asked for 7th semester grades to be reported. "Historically, to those who accept an offer of deferral (about 40%), one-third will end up being admitted, " said Sexton. “We don’t want to use up too many spots, since we are expecting more than 10,000 additional Regular Decision applications.”
