Santa Monica College: Computer Science

Hi there!
I'm a first year international college student in Santa Monica College.
I want to take Computer Science as my major and transfer to UCLA or USC.
But I don't know what are the requirement courses needed for transfer.
Can anyone help me please?

Computer Science is a very tough road, especially at top tier universities.
Don’t be a Computer Science major just for the the money/employment or you’re going to hate yourself. Do it because you KNOW you want to.
Best of luck.

Then I shall pursue my backup plan - Economics.

don’t just change your mind so quickly, you haven’t even tried yet.

Exactly. I’m not trying to dissuade you from pursuing computer science. I’m just letting you know that it will be a challenge.

Economics is not much easier…Biz econ @ UCLA average GPA is 3.92… at USC, not many apply to the economics program. It’s not highly regarded like UCLA.

My advice: apply to the major you’re interested in NOT what you believe is the easiest to get into. You’re more likely to well in classes you have a genuine passion for. This is especially true for upper division classes as they get more specialized and you have a lot more information to comprehend and process. Also, a lot of people think that they can play the system and apply to an “easy” major and then switch after they’ve transferred. While this does happen occasionally it’s at a cost and many of those students end up spending a lot more time, and consequently money, taking basically pre-reqs for two majors. Some people spend an extra year at universities like UCLA/USC finishing the pre-reqs they should’ve had when they transferred. And at those schools as nonresident student that’s an extra $50000-$80000 including all living/educational expenses for another year.

For CS you basically need to take Chem 10, 11 – physics 21 22 23 , Math 7 8 11 13 15 , CS 52 , CS 20A ,
Some colleges require you to complete IGETC and some dont, and this is also true for physics 24

For econ u need:
Econ 1 , Econ 2 , business 1 , math 54 , 7 , 8 + igetc

All the courses ive listed are smc courses

Good luck , message me if u need any help

I forgot to mention for CS its good to have CS 42 , 55 , 17 and math 10 as well
