Hey, I have a question for whoever thinks they can give some help. I'm signed up for SAT Chem, US History, and Literature on May 2. Chem is not going well; based on my experiences in AP Chem, I'm doubtful as to whether or not I can even get a 650+ on the chem exam. But of course I have to take one math/science subject test and chem is the only science i've to such an extent.

I got a 680 on the SAT Math section in March; do you think that I'd be able to get a similar score (give or take like 30 points) on the Math 1 test? I'm currently enrolled in Precalc and I have a B+ average. I haven't been prepping but if I did make the decision to switch from chem to math, i'd study intensively for the next week.

My goal is to retake the SAT again in June (I got a 2100 going in cold) and then be finished with standardized testing before summer. Please respond if you have any insight.

If you’ve made it most of the way through precalc, you may want to think about taking Math II. If math isn’t your greatest strength it may be more difficult for you than Math I, but I would at least take a practice test for each one and see which you do better on.

“But of course I have to take one math/science subject test…”

This is a misconception. Unless you are applying to schools that require specific subject tests (usually math-focused and science-focused schools like MIT), you don’t have to take math or science subject tests.

There are many applicants to top schools who didn’t take Math I, Math II, Chemistry, etc and just took Literature and Spanish and US History (like me!) and still got accepted.

You are supposed to take the subject tests that will show your strengths. If that’s not math or science, then don’t take math or science subject tests!

The Government, what you said was actually a relief. But will even some of the more top-tier colleges that I’ll apply to (Northwestern is probably my top choice at the moment) just accept SAT Lit and US History? I know I can score about 700 on both of those tests, but not so for my math/science ones. I don’t fully believe I can get into the Medill School of Journalism, but will not taking a math/science-related Subject Test hurt my chances of getting in dramatically?
