SAT 2 Score Too Low for Top 10 Schools?

Hey guys,

So june SAT scores were released today and I found out that I got a 760 on the Math II test.
Now I know that any score above 750 is exceptional, but because of the fact that so many kids get 800 on Math II and that I am only 82nd percentile despite my score, I was wondering if I should retake the test before applying early decision this fall.

Just looking for some guidance

it would be fatuous to retake it. check out blogs by admission officers on mitadmissions.org
it’s under the apply menu.
anyways, 760 is just as competitive as a 800.

It’s almost certainly fine. Where are you applying?

@notjoe My counselor recommended that if I’m applying to one ivy, I might as well apply to all of them, because after a point its essentially cr*pshoot

I’m also thinking of UChicago, Duke, and MIT

I would not retake it. Your score is fine regardless of where you are applying. Focus on your essays right now.

The Math SAT2 score mid50 for MIT is 770-800. That is the only reference I can find.

I don’t know what you mean top 10 schools but here is Test scores list from Business Insider article. http://www.businessinsider.com/colleges-with-the-highest-sat-scores-2014-8

Take it again. A 800 is very doable. I got a 730 the first time for some reason, took it again (and it was a breeze) and got 800

You are 82nd percentile with a 760? I was 74th percentile with a 780 for the May 2nd test.

should i retake?

I don’t think you should retake it. A 760 is a very good score and not incredibly different from 800

how did u get 82nd percentile for 760 when mine says 81st percentile for 800? lol

and honestly it depends on whether you have the time. A 760 vs an 800 isn’t going to make or break your chance of getting into a school. If you have extra time to study and to take the test then go for it, but if you don’t then don’t stress about it :).

You’re counselor is not very bright if s/he tells you to arbitrarily apply to every Ivy League college.

@caty122333 Lol exactly. I’m 81st percentile for 800. I think only retake it if you’re applying to MIT/Caltech or something and if you’re majoring in Math or something.
760 Math II for the June SAT is 66th Percentile, so only retake it if you’re majoring in something heavily math-oriented like if you’re majoring in Math for example.
@CaliCash is absolutely right. Applying to every ivy is a very bad idea. You will not have the time and effort to complete ALL the supplemental essays. For every single ivy, you’re competing with people who are only applying to that Ivy and who have put in 2-3 times the effort that you put in into their essays. Even if Ivies are a crapshoot, if you don’t put enough effort into your essays (which you won’t have the time for), then you will almost always be rejected.
You only hear of people getting into all 8 Ivies, but I bet there are WAY more people who get shut out from all 8.

I would definitely retake the test in the fall because your score will likely go up and I think it’s worth it. My score went up the second time and I only studied a bit more. And if it’s lower than just send in the one you have  It’s a very good score!!!
I also wouldn’t recommend applying to every ivy. Not all of them are good for all majors. Also the amount of essays can make your writing suffer. Also look at the cultures.
Good luck!
