This is my first time taking SAT as a Junior

Reading: 760 (which is OK, seeing as reading is hard to improve.)
Math: 710 (...)
Writing: 710 (74 MC, 8 essay)

I know 2180 is not bad at all, but at my school, over 2200 is the norm. And I just got a 238 on my Junior PSAT so I really was expecting a higher score on my
SAT :( Ultimately, I am hoping to get over 2300, hoping for 800 in math and higher writing score.

Seeing as math and writing are -easier- sections to improve on, does anyone have tips? Personal experience? I already did blue book tests, and I have a whole book of Dr. Chung Math SATI tests. Though for math I feel like careless errors account for the low score, so I'm not sure how to improve...For writing I have the Barrons writing handbook. I know all the common grammar rules, but sometimes on the SAT...the rules that I've learned don't answer the question...or maybe I'm just dumb. An 8 on the essay is bad, but what should I focus on?

I'm planning to study over winter break (only 2 weeks) and take it again Jan 26. What's the best way to study between now and then? Thanks :')

Your National Merit verifying SAT composite score of 2210 is already over 2200. As far as the 2180 is concerned, have you noticed that not even SAT itself reports that number anywhere?

Personally, I agree with MIT and do not want my son learning to write essays, the way it is done, for the W section. I am far more interested in the MC score than the controversial essay based W.

An MIT-wannabe should easily be able to ace the essay (interquartiles: 680-770). The Caltech’ers (700-790, which means that a quarter of Caltech’s class scored a 790 or 800 on the W) seem to have no problem scoring extremely high on the essay either, which is extremely formulaic.

Well yeah, ya’ gotta answer the prompt. Suggest you pick up a couple of prep books (Barron’s, Kaplan, PR) and review their essay examples. Hint #2 – write as much as you can. Length counts over brevity.

An MIT wannabe could easily, but the question is should he easily? Never mind you would not understand.

ps: I believe OP with a 710 is already in the range and with an MC 740 is comfortably in the range to be at MIT or Caltech- that was my point. Better to be an MC 720 and a 680 on W than a MC 600 with a 680 on W.

Did someone delete their comment? All the posters are mentioning some MIT wannabe haha. I am not sure what you are saying in this post…what 2210? Additionally, I am looking for a book (besides blue book) with accurate tests. I just need to do lots of practice…

That’s the thing with you people, I don’t even understand. I got into a prestigious uni with an SAT about the same. And you are still in junior year, please go and buy a capri-sonne and wait till your senior year to retake. But if you want to improve so badly, then try PR and Barron’s 2400. Pretty straightforward thingys. The only one I couldn’t improve so much was my CR which as you said is difficult to improve. Goodluck! But I’ll wait till my senior year. Some colleges don’t like too many SATs, they expect people to do other stuff with their lives rather than taking SATs every saturday.
