SAT / ACT Difference - Big Dilemma

Hi Parents,

Daughter took both tests - scored 1170 on the SAT and 28 on the ACT (equivalent to 1250 on the SAT). All of the colleges she applied to said they would accept scores sent from the school so she asked, in writing and verbally, the guidance office to only submit the ACT scores. Well, that detail got overlooked and they sent both. I realize now (too late) that I should not have had the school send the scores at all and instead paid the $$ to have them sent directly from ACT.

Question: will the schools truly only consider the higher of the two results, as I've heard? Is the score difference a big deal? I can't imagine that it won't factor in if the decision is borderline - if not on admissions at least on scholarship decisions. Can anyone help relieve my distress, offer any advice, or talk me down before I lose it?

God I hope so. Your D has very similar scores to me.

My daughter had similar scores 2 years ago. Both scores went to various college. She was accepted at some, I believe because of the ACT. I do believe they will look at the higher/better score for admission. I dont know however which they will use for aid. If you had a particular school in mind you could call admissions and speak to someone there, I found most offices very helpful.

If your daughter had taken the SAT more than once, they'd see all of the scores but utilize the best two... I would assume they would treat this situation the same, view them both but utilize the higher score.

I'm sure it'll work out fine for your daughter!

Isn't it interesting how kids score differently on the SAT and ACT?!

To complicate it further many schools will recalculate the ACT and take the highest of each and 1 school we know takes the highest math and highest english subscore and converts it to SAT. My D did worse in the ACT 27 but a 1290 in SAT (she is retaking the SAT). If you recalculate her ACT it is 29 and if you do the best eng and math it is a 31. She just sent everything to each school and is letting them figure it out. I think your D will be just fine!

Oh for aid they will use the highest score. Some schools will consider both when deciding placement freshman year.

Thanks for the support and encouragement. Frustrating as a parent when you do all the research and try to make informed decisions, but things like this are at the mercy of guidance office personnel for whom she is just one of 250 kids...........

I have similar scores and I only sent official ACT scores... but my SAT score are on my transcript. Also, some said that schools take the highest from multiple tests on the ACT and I have found this to NOT be true. They may consider it, but most do not do it officially(or atleast from the schools I'm applying to)... I really wish they did though. On one test I had 32 english, 32 math and then two significantly lower scores. On another I had 30 grammar(or whatever the second english section is called) and a 29 science.... BUT I've only ever gotten a 28 composite(if you add up the highest I'd have like a 31 :) ... but, who knows! :) )

With SAT's - the schools use the highest score of each subject, if you took it more than once and all results are submitted, you don't really have a choice in that. But with the ACT you have the choice of when and what is submitted.
