Hey everyone! I am currently a freshman in HS and am thinking about taking the SAT. Here is my reasoning. I am currently taking Algebra II Honors this year, and I read how it is recommended for students after taking Alg II to take the SAT. The problem is that I am still in 9th grade, while the language on the test is at an 11th-grade level.
I have already taken a few practice tests, and have scored well on math (770, 790, 780), but not as good in evidence-based reading/writing (640, 630, 650). Should I take the SAT?
I have also been alerted to super scoring, which to my understanding, is when I can take the best score in each subject area every time I take the test. Do many schools do it? I do plan to take the SAT more than once.
Personally I don’t see the value of taking the SAT as a freshman. Math builds on itself. You will not forget and you will review, practice, and study when you really need to take it.
Why not take SAT II - either Math I or Math II instead? Then you’ll have proof of a good math score without risking a low English score before you feel prepared.
I see. I will probably then take the SAT at a later year when my language skills have improved. Do you think that colleges are influenced by every SAT you take? Or do they just care about your highest scores?
It depends on the college. Some superscore (meaning that you can cherrypick your highest Math score and highest English score, even if they’re from two different sittings of the exam), some allow you to submit your highest score that you got in one sitting, and some require you to send all of your test scores. Check the websites of the colleges you’re interested in to see their individual policy on that.
You should practice the sat reading/writing section more especially since you have a few years bfore yuo have to take it. Unless there is a reason you can’t take it in the next few years, there is no reason to take it so early. You can take the math subject tests since they can be used for colleges and have the math materials you have learned.
If your Algebra 2 class includes trig, take the SAT Math II at the end of the year. As for the SAT, I would just brush up on your knowledge starting a couple months before you take the test junior year.
