SAT Averages: In State versus Out

I’ve seen a lot of inquiries in the past from students wondering what the difference was between average SAT scores of U-Va students from out of state versus in. The perception always seems to be that out of state is much higher.

The actual difference, according to the SCHEV website (the state of Virginia’s official website with stats on all colleges and universities in Virginia, both public and private) is probably less than you might think. For last year’s entering class, it was 1333 for in state and 1370 for out of state (not including the writing score). The year before it was 1338 and 1368, and the year before that 1341 and 1367. Scores tend to be about the same for Verbal for both groups, with higher Math scores for out of state.

I just thought some might be interested in knowing this information. Obviously a lot more goes into the process than test scores.

Every year, students post their scores and admission results on this website. Anyone can do a search to see them. You will see many oos applicants with very high SAT scores who were denied. Yes, it is a holistic approach to admissions. The U. says that what is most important is how a student did in the most challenging set of courses available in their high school.
