SAT CR woes

Okay, so next year, I really would like to get accepted into a top 20 school (preferably Northwestern). On my SAT, I have a 1460/1600 CR+math, which I would say is competitive for that school. However, I have a 670 in CR and a 790 in math. I know that 670 isn't terrible, but it's lower than my math score by quite a bit, so I am worried that it will affect me negatively. To counterbalance the 670, would any of you recommend sending an ACT in which I received a 32 in reading but a 31 composite in order to counteract the 670, or would this do more harm than good, because 31<1460(about a 33).

Sorry for the redundancy in the last sentence, I didn’t proofread :)

Retake the SAT of get the ACT higher, you have time. While a 670 won’t keep you out if they really wnt you, it will hurt your case. CR is the most important score, you can avoid most math in college but every class requires comprehension and critical thinking.

But I want to major in Econ, and math is the most important part. And trust me, I have been trying. I can’t seem to breach 31 on the ACT, and the last SAT retake I received 640 in CR, so I feel that this was just a test from heaven. should I send the ACT reading 32 or bot?

Have you gotten some help with the SAT? My son was in a similar situation. I got him a few individual sessions with an SAT tutor on what to study for the CR section, and his score improved by 100 points. It might be worth it, if you can afford it. You might want to avoid a whole SAT prep course, since you would not need it - just some fine tuned help on what you need to do on the CR section. Good luck.

Sending in the ACT reading seems like a good idea. The composite is pretty much on par with the reading score you got, so I can’t see how that will hurt you.

^It will hurt me because a 31 is less than a 1460 in relative terms, and I only want to send my best scores.

Is 31 enough to hurt coupled with 1460?

I need opinions

Go get better scores.

^you’re an idiot.

Do you want more opinions?

not from you.

Colleges say that they will consider your best scores. Take them at their word. Submit both and let the chips fall as they may. None of them are particularly bad scores.

I hope so haha.

But if they only consider the best scores like you say, wouldn’t the 31 be worthless?

Might, but why not let the school be the judge of that.

The 31 wouldn’t be worthless because they’ll look at the score breakdown, which has a stronger reading score.

I’m all for sending the ACT, as a 31 is a competitive score to begin with, so you won’t be hurt by the composite, and the reading portion will make up for your SAT CR score.

I think your application will be strengthened by having both the SAT and the ACT.

Ok, I probably will send the 31, but I may get a few more opinions before doing so

As it is, send in both. But I do suggest studying and retaking either of the tests; higher scores by no means guarantee an acceptance (my friend was waitlisted last year with a 35 ACT at Northwestern), but it should help.
