Hi, i heard from a friend that the SAT's are now cumulative- your highest scores in each section will be sent. I also heard that it doesn't matter how many times you take the SAT now because you can send the one that you want. What do you guys think the preferable amount of times someone should take the SAT be?

The highest scores in each section is commonly called “superscoring” the SAT. Not all colleges do this, however.

The second thing you are referring to (being able to take the SAT as many times as you want) is also only for a couple of colleges that accept “score choice”.

Preferable amount I believe is 2 (statistics have shown that after the second try the SAT scores of the student rarely go any higher).

No. “Students can select which scores they send to colleges by test date for the SAT and by individual test for SAT Subject Tests™.”

Most colleges accept score choice, not “only a couple.” But, to clarify for you, ckwong, if you send a score to a college, you have to send the whole sitting, eg., if you take it in May, the CR, M and W all go to the colleges. If you take it again in October, and go up in any of the sections, it is generally worth sending that score, as yes, the colleges will use the highest score in each section for their admissions decision.
