SAT Essay -- get a 12!

Alright, this post is for everyone to post their SAT essay strategies. We all know that you basically have to write two full pages and include a literature and history example, so here's the thread to post these examples and how you used them here.

Follow this format:

Best All-Around Piece of Literature:
Title/Author:
Possible specific ways to use this piece:

Best All-Around History Element:
Event/Person:
Possible specific ways to use this:

Thanks guys!! Hopefully this will help everyone out!!

Best All-Around Piece of Literature:The Prince/Acorn People
Title/Author: Niccolo Machiavelli/ umm...some guy
Possible specific ways to use this piece: Manipulate his various quotes in whatever way(s) I have to, like use his references to whatever main or central idea the prompt asks me to illustrate

Best All-Around History Element: French/American Revolution
Event/Person: George Washington/King Louis 14th & his wife
Possible specific ways to use this: Show the partisanship, dedication, emotional overtone; basically illustrate once again the main idea or central idea the prompt wants me to illustrate

Got a 10 on the last essay; reworked my strategy, realized all the college board wants is a cut and paste job that's well written:)

Best All-Around Piece of Literature: Macbeth/Ragtime/The Great Gatsby
They work well for change or motivation stuff.

Spoon River Anthology - A lot of quotes can be used from this book.

Best All-Around History Element: Gilded Age/Progressive era
complements the novels I use

Best All-Around Piece of Literature: Les Miserables
Author: Victor Hugo
Possible specific ways to use this piece: The book has everything in it... from redemption to revolution.

Best All-Around History Element: Revolutions/ activists

This is what I used for the april SAT

Best All-Around Piece of Literature:
Title/Author: Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald
Possible specific ways to use this piece: I can't specifically remember. But it was something on how Gatsby rigid schedule helped him be what he is.

Best All-Around History Element: WWII
Event/Person: Germany after WWI.
Possible specific ways to use this: German's were oppressed so they had to find a lead (Hitler) to help them find a better life. Something like that, i don't even remember te topic

You can use these examples into any one of those essays. I think I used those in at least two practice essays

Im sorry to say this but i think history is quite easier to use than literature.
the only books that i enjoyed was George Orwell's 1984 and Merry SHelly's Frankenstein. I guess Gatsby was good too.
But wars like ww1, ww2 are great essay resources

you may be right, history might be easier to recall and exploit than novels, but novels look better for the readers.

when I tried world war 1 and 2, it didn't come together nice; i couldn't remember any churchill or roosevelt quotes:(

o you know what is funny richkid, when i took my april sat, i was in my history teacher's room. His room is filled with quotes. lol

best topic ever

I

do you think it's still okay to use two history examples?

I repeat again. The best literature example is The Brave New World.

Niccolo Machiavelli/ umm...some guy

Prince/Niccolo Machiavelli

question....what if you write the first full page and then half of the second sheet? will your score be lower cuz it's not long enough? or is it long enough?

it is possible, but i wouldn't worry that much.
My friend didnt even finish his conclusion and still got a 12

Statistics have shown over and over that the longer the essay the higher the score. Of course, there will be exceptions. But unless you feel extremely confident with your writing, you'd better ffill up the two pages.

hmm two conflicting posts back to back. I guess i'll believe the latter, just so i don't get my hopes up. On the other hand, I did think my essay was very good. Except I did not finish my conlcusion, like your friend. So I'm thinking at least a 10.

see, what i'm worried about is not my essay. a 10 is fine if you have a good mc. but mc was hard for me on 4/1. damn. i'm glad section6 was exp. but still.

thebillsfan, how big is your handwriting?

I got a 10 on the essay back on the Jan SAT because my conclusion was rushed. The most important part of you essay is the introductory paragraph and then the conclusion paragraph.

My friend who got a 12 suggested to end my conclusions with a thoughful statement.... like a proverb or something. Make it up if you can't think of an actual one.

yeah my conclusion sucked. it ended in mid thought. no concluding line i HAD NO TIME! damnit 25 minutes is NOT enough.

my handwriting isn't particularly small or big. It's "normal" sized. I know that doesn't really help, but i'll put it this way: the fact that my essay was shorter wasn't due to handwriting
