I have a question about how to start an essay. Some people told me to start straightly to the point while others tell me to develop the topic first before stating my point. Which one is better?

It depends on what works best for you.

Whenever my students have difficulty writing essays, I recommend that they straight by directly answering the question.

“Developing the topic” comes easier for some writers, and while it does give you bonus points for style (if your first paragraph is well-written), it is not necessary for writing a convincing essay.

Thank you!
