I was just wondering how important the SAT Essay score was.
Do colleges look at them?
If so, is there much of a difference between a score of 11 and 12?

the “difference” between an essay that scored 11 and a 12 is 1 point.

But to be honest I don’t know if many schools really pour over your essay, and if you got an 11 obviously one of those scorers thought you deserved the full 12. You shouldn’t be worried about one point though anyway, go play outside.

Yeah, I had a few questions about this.

Do colleges see what you got for the MC and Essay breakdown?
And do they prefer 1 higher than another? (I got 70 MC, 12 essay)

bumpinnnnnnnn

I really doubt that adcoms have enough time for each application to be looking at things like this. They look at the SAT per section, to get a quick picture of what you are good at, e.g. high M, low CR and W, or vice versa. The only reason I think this would come up would be if for some reason you have like an 80 MC but a 4 essay, which I really doubt happens often. I think that is about as discerning as they get.

As it happens, my son had an 800 CR, a 79 on the multiple choice part of the W, but two 3s on the essay (6 total). We were discussing just now whether it’s worth ‘the opportunity cost’ of time for him to take the SAT again on Saturday.

He’s got a disorder of written expression, but didn’t get extra time from Collegeboard (he’s bright enough that his overall written work is is still ‘average’, even though his coding speed on the WISC was a 73 (2nd percentile, or something like that).

His GPA is 3.3-3.4, mostly because he’s chronically ill (and, secondarily, because he writes very slowly, see above). So I’m concerned that colleges will see the GPA, SAT, and look at the SAT essay to see which is the real applicant. I’m betting he could get an 8-10 if he took the SAT again – but I don’t know whether colleges actually DO look at the SAT essays.

Does anyone have info from admissions officers (books, workshops…) to tell my DS and me one way or another?
