SAT essay

Hi CCers,

I gave the December SAT and was disappointed with my writing score, as I had been consistently getting in the 740-800 range in the section, and my score suddenly dropped to a 660. I suspect the essay, in which I got an 8, was the culprit.
I am posting my Essay below. It would be great if you can critique it and tell me where I went wrong, as well as what I can do to improve it. Thanks!

Prompt: Can people who are not famous be better role models than people who are famous?
Response:

Most people regard Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela or other famous personalities as their role models. These models are labelled so because they teach us the important values of persistence and sanguinity in the face of adversity among other things. While they may be sublime role models, people who are not famous can be role models too; in fact,as demonstrated by the examples of my uncle and my grandfather, people who aren’t famous can be better role models than those who are famous.

My uncle had the misfortune of seeing everything that was dear to him crumble before his eyes in the span of barely a month. he lost his father, went through a painful divorce and lost his job. Still, he saw the glass as half full. There was of course nothing he could do but hope for things to improve, and they did. Though he couldn’t get his dad back, he did get his job back and married someone else after a year.

My uncle teaches me that people should remain optimistic in the face of adversity. When all is lost, one should keep hope. To me, my uncle is a wonderful role model.

Another example that asserts that people who are not famous can be excellent role models is that of my grandfather. My grandfather served in the army for most of his life. He frequently recounts incidents and war stories emphasizing on the fact that one should be able to risk everything or she has, including his or her life, in an endeavor. My grandfather encourages me to give my one-hundred percent in every activity I undertake.

My grandfather, just like my uncle, is a role model to me. He teaches me the importance of taking risks. Neither my uncle nor my grandfather is famous, yet they both inspire me more than do Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama, Mandela or Gandhi.

While famous people can be excellent role models, people who are not famous can be great people to follow too. As the examples of my grandfather and my uncle suggest, we should be mindful of the fact that the not-so-famous can be better role models.

This thread helped me out a lot : http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/645763-how-write-12-essay-just-10-days.html

I went from an 8 to 11 on the essay, and also from a 610 to 790 overall.

Good luck!

Thank you dialga2014! I will go through it.

It would be great if you can tell me what I’ve done wrong so that I can focus specially on that particular area as well.

In my opinion, the basic format presented in Academic Hacker’s Guide is enough to get a 10. Looking at the essay you posted above, I can think of the following things that come to my mind:

  1. The essay is too short in length. Unfortunately, the SAT offers little space for creativity and you need to FILL both pages if you want to get a good score. While there are many high scorers who don’t necessarily do so, that is exactly how the majority of test takers get a 10+ on the essay. The more content detail you have, the more the grader thinks you have a command of the subject.

  2. I think the introduction is flat. Everything you want for a good score is right there in the link. Do follow that and work on the intro, transitions, conclusions, etc. They are very important as the grader must not find himself/herself in a confused state while going through your essay.

  3. Your essay isn’t evened out properly. The introduction part is a huge chunk, which is followed by a relatively shorter paragraph.

  4. Your examples are good. But for the SAT essay, it would have been even better if you could spread out the sources of your examples. For eg: Tech, History, Literature, Sports, Cinema, Personal life, and even your own made up example. If you can follow the classic - INTRO - 3 EXAMPLES - CONCLUSION - format and pay good attention to other minor details, this essay can turn into a really good SAT essay.

  5. One final point I would like to make is that any SAT essay prompt is malleable. You can create your own set of characters and scenarios to set up examples. The only things you need to focus on are: setting up some kind of problem, how the character/society/(anything else) overcame the challenge, and what changes/progress took place. You just need to tie up your examples to the prompt.

Good luck. Here is a link to another guide that shows how it’s possible to simply BS your way through the SAT essay, considering you have strong thesis statements, transitions and overall good writing skills. http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/1525053-defeating-the-sat-essay-in-2-days.html

Good Luck!

This was very helpful. Thanks a ton!
