On the UNC website it says that SAT Writing scores of 690 and higher place out of English 101 and 102. Does this mean that taking the English Language AP was pretty useless, as it gives credit for Eng 101?

Useless?
A strong course load is one of the reasons you might get in. In my opinion, that is certainly far from useless.

No, not really. It shows that you are really dedicated to your studies.

AP Language prepares you for college writing (as does AP Lit). The SAT doesn't prepare you for anything other than the SAT. You'll be glad you took the class.

I agree with UNCgal.

My AP English Language class was the hardest class I took in high school, and for this reason the English classes at UNC are a piece of cake.

The SAT does not prepare you well for academic-level writing. I know people with great SAT who write like 5th graders. It's really not that impressive to a college professor. Not saying that these people will always write poorly, it's just that they have to adjust to college level writing.

Either way, ENGL 102 is a joke of a class lol

Yeah....AP English prepares you much better for university level writing than SAT writing does.

I think what the OP was referring to was actually taking the AP test, not the class. Of course, if you think you are going to go to UNC for sure, and you already have an SAT writing score above 690 that would allow you to place out of English 101 & 102, then you could make a good arguement for not going through the stress or expense of taking the AP test itself.

Yes, I would've taken the course anyway. I just wouldn't have taken the AP test if I had known I was exempted already.
