S has taken Chem and is going to take Math II(applying in fall). Someone from his school applied this year and said that Duke recommends 3 (has been changed to 2). When I went on website today it says strongly recommends a language subject test although not required for placement. Did most of you take Foreign language subject test?

Took the MathII, Chem, and French. It’s probably a good idea to throw in a lang … shows you’re not all numbers and facts …

I have received a LL for Fall '10 …

I too recieved a likely letter for fall '10 and I took Spanish, Chem, and US. The only reason I took Spanish though is because i speak it haha. Generally I heard you should take a quantitative test (preferably math because some schools require it) a non quantitative( such as lit or US history) and then whichever one you please

I didn’t receive a likely letter (T_T) but I took Math II, Physics and Chinese. I also heard that it’s best to take a quantitive and a non-quantitive.

I think that is why he is hesitant…so many do take it that speak the language.

My S took 3 subject tests- SAT II math, Literature, and Latin. He took the Latin after his junior year of Latin and received a 740. If you look at Duke’s foreign language department website, you can look at a particular language and find out about placement for a language according to your AP or SAT subject test score. Of course the SAT II test does not give you college credits, but it is used as a tool for departmental course placement. S’s 740 in Latin is the equivalent of a 5 on the AP Latin exam. This is something that I didn’t realize until I started looking at specific dept. websites a few days ago.

He will be taking the AP Spanish at the end of senior year…college decisions would be made by then and if he does attend this could be used for placement, but this would not be available for admissions. I think he thinks that the subject test could hurt rather than help, and time is an issue as well…do you think it will hurt his application if he does not take it?

kurz:

I don’t think that the lack of an SAT foreign language subject test will “hurt” your son’s chances… the Spanish AP and transcript containing Spanish each year with high marks, will be a plus. On the other hand, many schools highly recommend taking 3 (or more in a few cases) subject test. I would recommend taking them in two areas- as suggested by other posters above. My son’s APs were heavily favoring science and math courses. That is one reason we chose the Lit and Latin tests. Of course the SAT II math is the one most often required by schools.

I didn’t get a likely letter (:() but I took Lit, Math II, and French (NOT native lol) and got 800, 790, 800 respectively
