SAT I Math is low. SAT II math is high. What to do

Ahh, the SAT. My 2140 is an anomaly amidst other higher scores, mainly because of the math section (680). I chalked it up to a bad test and blew it off at the time...now, seeing some of the scores that it takes to get accepted and getting deferred myself from Yale's SCEA, I'm way more nervous. The thing is, I did well on Math I and II (770 and 760) and my ACT (34). I've submitted apps to 10 colleges, and the psychological benefits of being "done" applying are absolutely wonderful. I'm applying to Columbia RD. If I retake the SAT and get a higher score, how much does that increase my chances?

Your chances will increase by 13.7%

So the answer is “stop wasting our time, make your own decision.” Thanks

It depends on how many times you have taken the SAT I. If you’ve only taken it once, I would suggest retaking it and just working on getting the math section above a 700 or 750. It’s hard to predict how much difference that is going to make since you’ve already demonstrated your math abilities in SAT II’s. But taking it a second time will most likely give you the satisfaction that you gave it your best shot.

^I agree with that.

But if you’re applying to the humanities or something, I wouldn’t retake it. It’s important to do whatever feels right to you, though.

G’luck!

Son 1 had almost the exact scores ( 2180 with 680 in Math) 750 Sat II math 1 and 780 Sat II math 2, was happy with his Sat I since it was math he took in 7th grade. He took no prep courses as was too busy to retake SAT I with all of his out of school and extra curriculars. He did not listen to me to retake, and we discussed the schools perception of which he said why would the school bother to recommend them if they would not look at them. ( as well as a stubborn comment, if they arent willign to look at the body of my work as opposed to a singel day’s score, maybe I dont want to go there

Well he was blanked at the Ivys, waitlisted at CMU Tepper, NYU Stern and U Chicago. In UVA and W&M with scholarships, PSU Honors College Saphire Scholar. I asked his guidance office to tell us why ( He was a very invovled and teacher loved student, he won Scholar athlete award, captain of track team- recruited for track to lotsa small colleges, Decca nationals finalist, won his senior year ) and all they could say is his Sat I was low compared with lower ranked students ( he was 3rd) in his school that got into the ivys and these schools.

I am sorry it has to be a numbers game but it seems it is. He was heavily recruited to W&M and PSU, chose W&M and loves it. I am here because he is thinking of doing the combined program with Columbia/W&M.

Good thing for me is I pay 1/4 of the tutiuon and fees, his mother gets to protect him from the big city for 3 more years, and W&M AP/Baccalaureat policy lets him get a double major BA ( Econ and Math) plus the degree in engineering from Columbia.
