**SAT II Biology December 2015 Discussion**

was the shark and the dolphin streamline question convergent evolution? and why was the answer to the natural disaster question not Natural selection?

@AGoodFloridian I guessed that too. Thank goodness.

@SatBiology I chose convergent evolution. I thought the question said only the 6 unique ones died off. I also chose natural selection because they weren’t fit to survive the environment. Genetic drift is the allele frequencies changing overtime for random reasons.

@SatBiology I put convergent evolution as well

thanks for the convergent evolution confirmation.
btw, i completely agree with you on natural selection. It said that many survived but the small # of species thathad the special allele died, meaning they were not fit for evolution right?

Wait, how about the one about what is true about polyploidy,
i put it’s common in plants

what were the choices @jmh311

@jmh311 same. I wikied it just now and it confirms that its common in plants. Phew.

isnt it a mutation

Some more from the memory bank.
Shark and dolphin… Would it be different structure, same function? If so, that is convergent evolution. I chose that too, man… Mr.BullPoop was on my side today…

A natural disaster wouldn’t constitute as natural selection because there isn’t any room for a specific trait to be more advantageous than another, thus promoting its continuity. It was a disaster, the normal and unique species were killed off.

There was another involving Darwins idea of natural selection and how it could be inspected. In populations, right? I don’t think it could’ve been merely on individuals.

mmmm, i thought it was mutation which leads to variation?

Yea i was torn between mutations and common in plants, but i thought assumed that it was referring to gene mutations, idk lol

yeah i put populations for the darwin question

Though, reflecting on my thought process. Did the species die off after the natural disaster? If so, then yes, natural selection would’ve applied to those individuals favored in the new environment. I had interpreted it as a sudden event, removing some individuals at that instant. Oh boy… XD

About polyploidy. That was the only question on the test that I wholeheartedly skipped. I had absolutely no friggin idea, at all.

There was one involving allopatric speciation. Something to do with some cheetas separated. Though it could be from a practice test I did yesterday. Anybody remember it?

@AGoodFloridian The cheetah species separated and couldn’t breed with each other anymore I think? Can’t remember if I chose a random answer or skipped.

I chose allopatric speciation almost instinctively when I saw “geographically separated” or something along those lines. That’s the exact definition of allopatric speciation.
At least it should be, it was one of the words on my “what the hell do these mean?” list. (Faithful members including allantois, malphigian tubes, and nephridium!)

Yeah, currently considering canceling after I went over questions that I did remember…

were there any other questions that u guys recall having trouble on

the cleavage problem lmao
