SAT II Chemistry

To someone who has taken the test: Are the review questions on the sparknotes site (<a href="http://www.sparknotes.com/testprep/books/sat2/chemistry/%5B/url%5D">http://www.sparknotes.com/testprep/books/sat2/chemistry/</a>) similar to those on the test? I am trying to review for the test this Saturday and would like an opinion on what is most important. Thank you.

I don't know but Barron's is really good.

what's the curve on this test?

Is the SAT II Basically the material that most high schools cover in Chemistry 1?

yeah, well the best way to prepare for the sat II chemistry is to use sparknotes to get the general overview and then use the princeton review book that is specifically for the chemistry. that helped me get a 710/800. i also was taking ap chem at the time so that helped in one aspect that i was already studying for chem. so yeah, review stuff from ur regular chem course as well as outside prep material cause u may get questions like what color is copper sulfate for example and u would want to know that.

no, the test material generally relates to AP chem more than it does to chem 1, at least at my school. we never even covered kinetics, equilibrium, the 2nd or 3rd laws of thermodynamics, or electrochemistry. nor did we do more difficult problems involving gas laws, enthalpy, etc. additionally, some organic stuff always shows up, so you might need to take AP chem.

Right now, I’m in AP Chem and doing redox equations. I’m worried that our class won’t get to organic chemistry by December 3rd. I know all the basics (ie stoichiometry, nomenclature, lab techniques, some organic chemistry), so am I in good shape?

um...ur taking the dec 3rd test...i would suggest going through a princeton review book specifically written for sat 2 - "cracking the sat 2 chemistry exam" - and u can decide if you're better in m or e through the book. i took molecular because i knew more about chemical stuff than i do with ecology stuff. up to u.

What’s the main difference between M and E? Which one is harder?

wait, I thought m and e were for SAT II biology.....omg, please don't tell me the chem. has weird sections too.

bump. anyone have an answer to that?

Goldfish I don't think anybody can qualify E/M Biology as 'harder' for you...
Are you better versed in the Environmental or Molecular aspect of the course?

And for the Chemistry I recommend the Princeton Review and the Sparknotes (because they were the books I used). But don't feel too bad about the Sparknotes tests - a lot of them are pretty badly written and the medium is different and I didn't do very well on them. Still, they can give you a good idea of what you need to review, and it's much faster than a paper-based one.

The SAT II Chemistry has some pretty terrible questions on it - I ran into a history-esque question on mine. Don't memorize every little fact! Get the basics down... the College Board website can give you a good breakdown of the marks distribution which you should definitely use since you're in your last week of preparation.

Good luck!

sorry guys, m and e are for bio....so sorry...anyway, study princeton review and sparknotes and if ur taking an ap chem course, that helps.

-Suman

also, if u get a princeton review book, make sure u get the one for the SAT II, the chem ap-prep book format is different than the sat format so if you want to get used to the format, use the specifically for the sat 2 chem.

what about kaplan? I really don't want to buy the book but i think that i can get one from the library.
If we have one week left, what would you (anyone) recommend studying? i'm in ap chem and we've covered....stoiciometry, thermodynamics, laboratory stuff, gases, solids, and some other stuff. But i'm not sure what else there is on the SAT II chem. How in depth of formula's do they expect us to know?

i'm not sure about kaplan. i haven't used the book. yesss, i would definitely recommend studying. for the sat 2 exams, it's best to study til the day before unlike the sats where u shouldn't study the day before since it tests a particular area. thats my theory.

I am going to just keep working on the SparkNotes (online) tests. That way I don't have to buy a book. Some of the questions seem a bit strange (some things I haven't encountered in Chem.), but I hope the real test will be a little bit easier -- at least, not as tedious.

apmcavoy, did you buy the tests? It won't let me access them even when i did make a new username.

they give u a free test when u sign up, and if u want more u have to buy em.

I didn't use their real tests, I just did the review questions at the end of each section in their online "book."
