On UGA's website, it says under admissions criteria that the SAT II subject tests are recommended but not required, yet in some of the posts by admitted applicants I haven't seen any mention of them in your stats.

Are they something that you feel should be taken by an OOS student who will apply EA? My S seems to feel that he should go ahead and take maybe 2 of them just to be safe. He has taken the ACT twice: his best score was a 30 composite and he just got his first SAT score back- 1230 for CR and Math combined. He is hoping that they will look at his ACT test score moreso than the SAT. (Right now he doesn't want to retake it- his brain is "fried" as he says :) ) Anyway, I was just curious about the subject tests- any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

We are instate. My D only submitted her ACT scores. I know there were kids in her school who took subject tests and they would have been sent with their other scores. However, a lot has changed in two years. When my D applied, on her status page on the UGA site, they listed your scores when they were received, but did not have any place to list subject tests and just listed the composite for the ACT - and they took the best subtests from however many sittings you submit.

Out of state is a lot different from in state and all I can tell you is probably everything counts. They now DO have a section for SAT II scores on the application status page, but like you noted it's not required.

Just my two cents, but since SAT II isn't required, you might want to focus on getting a good score on the SAT itself. That's probably more important (and more than likely weighs more) for admissions. But he already has a higher SAT score than I did when I applied (and was accepted) EA. But I'm in state and I'm very sure being in state helped immensely.

Edit to add: You can take the subject tests to get credit for classes though if he wants to do that. I'm not sure what scores he'll need. You can go to the honors program site and it's found probably in the same place as AP credit.

Thanks to all of you for your replies thus far. After thinking it over, he is going to go ahead and take two of the subject tests, possibly next weekend as a standby just to be through with it. I feel for the kids of today really as I feel they are so utterly over tested. APs, SOLs (standards of learning tests here in VA), SATs, ACTs, regular exams, etc. It is such a catch 22 though, because if they don't "get on the train" they get left at the station.

jenmarie, interesting information on the SAT II tests for credit. We didn't know that (and actually it may help his mood if he thinks that the tests will benefit him in other ways other than just trying to get admitted!)

He is thinking that he will take the subject tests and then let it be with his (best) ACT score of 30, his GPA, rank, EC's, etc. to apply with come fall. If he doesn't get in, then it wasn't meant to be anyway I guess. I'm not going to recommend to him to retake the SAT again. I want him to "chill" a bit really about school. Come Oct. if he wants to retake the SAT after having the summer to relax a bit, it will be up to him. Thanks again everyone and have a nice weekend!
