SAT II: U.S. History Discussion May 2009

wasn’t there a greenback party? so i wouldn’t think they would exist if both parties liked greenbacks
i think it was the chinese one, since there wasn’t any fuss against it

your welcome! :)

uh i don’t think that was the wording on the sat today…slightly different. maybe it was. my brain’s kinda fried rite now! lol

im pretty sure it was social darwinism. i don’t think any of the other answers fit.

the common theme was restricting immigration.

so i just remembered some question about smugglers and trials?? what was the answer to that? i skipped it because i had no idea when i had it down to 3 but i’m curious in case it shows up on the ap!

RedCatharsis
Antisecular and antiliberal movement in the 1920s(?) - Fundamentalists
New Deal - Labor gains right to collectively bargain?
What killed off the cattle - It was NOT “less demand for beef” right? I just don’t remember what I put…

I agree with all those.

Kiwi_Nights
Almost positive it was social Darwinism
For the other question, I put the Chinese immigration.

aw **. i know all about social and reform darwinism, (favorite topic of my history teacher) it just never struck me as a political philosophy. the SAT practice tests were tricky in their word selection, so i was hesitant to put anything down at all. ugh im *ed. glad to know i got the chinese immigration question, though.

yea the one about the smugglers at the vice admiralty courts?

what about the one about 1920s immigration? was it used to restrict immigration from south/eastern europe or was it used to restrict immigrants from asia

Vice admiralty courts: no jury.

And I put Portugal because I’m pretty sure the question didn’t directly refer to the Americas. I think I checked this, and somebody else thought this too.

Wait, are you guys SURE that JFK was anticommunist in Congress?

Also, I have 74 questions compiled, but there are still some in the air:

Spain v. Portugal (exploration)
Cattle - I think it was “homesteaders,” because they had little or no effect on the CATTLE KINGDOMS.

Cliffnotes:

This implies decrease in demand? You keep on producing because demand has decreased, which in turn, kills the market.

What was least imperialist?

for vice admiralty, i said no trial by jury.
and for 1920’s i said S and Easter Europeans, not sure though, could be Asians.

RedCatharsis: Can i see your compiled answers?

South/Eastern. 1882 - Chinese exclusion Act. Not until WWII is there a Japanese Internment/Immigration act or legislation, either.

I swear the question asks about the exploration OF America? But it talks about Europeans as a whole.

yea red satharsis if you could post the total list that would be awesome

Questions list. Some are answered, ask if you need to know. I only have 73, I had one twice.

This means we need only 17 more questions, guys, for the whole test.

Walt Whitman

 • Rejection of reason (math =/= astronomy)
 • Romanticist - stared up to the night sky in awe, emotion

Women’s morality

 • DEFINITELY cult of domesticity. Talked about properly raising the “future man”

Cattle decline

 • Decrease in demand for beef. Homesteaders took over grazing land, drought, overgrazing

1920’s immigration blocks

 • Southern and eastern Europeans

New Deal

 • Helps Unions with Wagner Act

First exploration

 • If it said first then it would be Portugal, idk if it said anything else

1880s parties both favored

 • Restrict immigration of Chinese

Articles of Confederation

 • Land (land ordinances). Definitely not successful in taxes

I’m not convinced about the town meetings thing, because at the time 17th century, from spark notes.com

Religion and Massachusetts Bay
The Massachusetts Bay Colony operated according to a system called congregationalism, in which each independent church congregation served as the center of a community’s political and social life. Only those individuals with good standing in the church could participate in government.

hmm maybe does not prove my point, but we’ll see. I put church leaders, becuase I recall it being very theocratic. THEN they lost power and with the halfway covanent it became democratic.

I put anticommunists for JFK, nixon and other things.

When do we hear back? and WWI did not start becuase of mexico…

I can’t help but to still object to this.

How could homesteaders take up grazing land, if there wasn’t good grazing land to begin with?

Also:

And, I remember in texts that a decrease in beef demand DOES happen. I even quoted this earlier.

The choices were

A barbed wire
B homesteaders
C weather (drought)
D decrease in demand for beef
E overgrazing

Idk

I really think for the 1920’s question, it was Southern and Eastern
Europe. Think about the National Origins Act of 1924.

First exploration of NA is not by portugal…you guys are misunderstanding that if Spain employs someone from portugal, then it counts as Spanish, not portuguese.

And it said systematic, didnt’ it? Portugal NEVER does that to the North America, at least. And it’s mostly Spanish dominance in SA, with an exception to Brazil.

What is your preferred answer? I had E at first, then I realized it was wrong. And so are the other choices. C is at least historically accurate.

what was the answer to the question about monroe doctrine, I put codification of international law
