SAT II: U.S. History Discussion May 2009

I’ll be estatic if I get a 700. Though this was my easiest section.

red: Nixon came to fame as a statement and poltician after his “kitchen debate” with Khruschev in Moscow of 1959–not as a war hero. JFK on the other hand, came to fame as a young eccentric man coming from a very successful and wealthy family–nobody knew him as a celebrated war hero. His stance was against communism during his election in which he believed in catching up to the soviets in terms of nuclear bombs and the space race. And we all know how McCarthy came to fame… so the answer has to be anticommunist.

what about that question about the growth of slavery in the colonies?
“all of these factors contributed to the growth of slavery in the colonies EXCEPT…”
i put “few whites viewed slavery as immoral” but i think i was wrong…

Guys, Nixon, McCarthy and JFK were all similar in that they launched their careers after World War II as anticommunists. They were not all highly decorated war heroes.

First to have regular maritime voyages? Since the question didn’t say “to the Americas,” the answer has to be Portugal. Led by Prince Henry the Navigator, the Portuguese crossed Cape Bojador on the west coast of Africa in 1434 almost 60 years before Columbus. So the answer really is the Portuguese.

um i’m very sure that was not the answer to the lost generation question… there was another answer that said they wrote stuff cuz they were disillusioned with society.

And isn’t mcclures the progressive era???

Yes, but that would be around the 1920s. the question asked for a year.

did the systematic exploration question ask specifically about the americas, or just regular exploration? because how would a voyage to the west coast of africa be considered exploring the americas? (I said portugal, but I’m starting to reconsider that)

ugh i’m pretty sure portugal is correct, not spain. at least my REA AP USH book (1st page) tells me so.

What’s the cut line for 780-800? and can someone tell me questions asked for #2, 4, 23, 33, 52, 53, 56, 59, 60, 61, 63, 64, 69, 70, 71, 74, 75, 76, 80 & 81? If you remember even one of them, please tell me : ( I tend to blank out after the test…so I can only remember half the questions I saw and right answers I put to them  thank yoU!!

^Number 4: I think this one refers to the fact that Eisenhower enforced the Brown decision by sending troops to Little Rock. Does this ring a bell?

This should complete the list:
-NE Abolitonist would least likely support manifest destiny
-imperialism does NOT accomadate the growing us population
-Greatest change of Dem voting came before the Great Depression

^#63 on the other list ("Spain- didnt need mmanfuctoring outlets for its goods)… was that the same question that had answer choices to keep its prestige, and to keep dominance in europe as well?

could someone tell me the other choices for a question about mercantilism? what was the wording of the question? don’t remember this one

McClures magazine was from roaring twenties. There was picture of a flapper on the cover!

For the colonial assemblies question, im still confused as to why the correct choice was not that all members were white, male property owners. They all had to be at least that in order to be in the assemblies.
