SAT II: U.S. History Discussion May 2009

But similarly, if it isn’t specific to the Americas, wouldn’t other choices like Chinese or Vikings be true?

And also, there’s a difference between what I posted and what you did. How is yours systematic? They’re spread out by like 12 years. I would rather say that’s 1) sporadic? or 2) noncontinuous.

In terms of history, 12 years is not a huge difference. That’s actually pretty close together. I’m not trying to debate this subject; from studying I’ve just learned that Portugal was the first to really be involved in exploration on a large-scale. True, they didn’t do so much in the Americas, but I didn’t think the question asked about the Americas unless I’m mistaken. We can’t assume it was the Americas if they didn’t specifically state “Americas.”

From wikipedia: “Portugal was the leading country in the European exploration of the world in the 15th century.” If it is the leading country, its got to be pretty systematic.

Article: Portuguese colonization of the Americas

i think that people are overthinking this. the question was meant to test whether you know about Prince Henry the Navigator, Dias, and De Gama and that they all came before columbus.
and Prince Henry had a school for explorers where he sent out systematic explorations the most famous of which was dias in 1488.

It’s portugal

I think that’s a problem. It’s not highly indicative of most APUS texts…

and i think its VA not FL…I thought it asked for the first permanent English colony in the Americas?

I’m quite certain it did not.

Popular consensus from MANY people is it that it was overall, not English.

I was also pretty certain that it said English as well, but because so many people had said it was European, I thought I must have read it wrong :P

I remember the explicit rhetoric–it did not say English.

haha so after going through this thread lets say i skipped 20 and got 5 wrong…what range would my score be in?

Any ideas on what a score of -10 questions will be after the curve?

Minimal of 700 flat

780 or 790

That question definitely didn’t say English. I remember 'cuz I read it over again to make sure it wasn’t a trick and it was St Augustine in Florida.
Ahhhhhhhhh I can’t wait for these results!

What would minus 14 or so mean score-wise? Around 750 maybe? I’m not sure if I got all of those wrong, but there are some I’m not sure about so…

wow, On the KAplan book for U.S history 2008-2009, there was a practice question just like that.

It asked where was the oldest european city in the new world and it was St. Augustine.

For the one that said

Which is NOT true 3 years after start of great depression

was it

inflation or increased investment in capital goods???

thanks

-14 questions would mean that you have a -17 on raw, so you have a 740.

What isn’t true is inflation–investment in capital goods DID increase, in fact. It doesn’t inflate because economically, apparently, inflation and deflation happen in strict periods, and the entire great depression period fell under deflation.

The question definitely positively did NOT say English.

and…yes, the answer was inflation, I believe.

hey i have some added info about the African question.
the Kaplan book states :
" Rice became the cash crop of Carolina, in addition to indigo. Both increaed the need for labor, most of which was obtained from Africa. Mamy of the African slaves were experienced in growing rice in their own countries and seemed resistant to malaria."
does this quote give support to the answer choice talking about why Africans were chosen to be exported to the americas?

also, does anyone know when the results will come out? I skipped 3 questions and i think i missed 10 or 11. what score would that be with and without the curve?

a 750+ im guessing.

do results come out tomorrow? im getting nervous i cant wait >.<
