about how high does one have to score in order for those scores to help in the admission process. I know that anything 700+ is good enough. But what's a general range for someone to appear competitive to the admission officers?

Also, if you do well on two subject tests and then you score a 600s on Physics or Lit, would that hurt you?

I took chem 710 and math2 760. Expecting better scores on 10-24

This really depends on what you want to major in and what type of university. For example if your are thinking of Chemical Engineering, you might be ok, but Mechanical or Civil Engineering may frown a bit at your lower Physics score (read: retake). MIT's profile has over 750 for their subject tests, but obviously all the other factors plus your essays/recs will weigh in. Lit may be important if you're doing liberal arts, but not as important for science-related majors.

In terms of appearing competitive, keep in mind that this is supposed to be the most competitive year for college admissions in US history with over 3.3 million seniors applying for spots.

MIT and Stanford are my goals right now. And technically, I'm under the international student status, if that gives you a better picture of my competition pool

if you are in international status, you better bring your scores up. International students generally do better than non international students. it's WAY more competitive if you are an international student. Schools really don't have a reason to admit foreigners if they have americans that are just as good or more qualified to be in their school. international students must stand out out of all to be chosen.
