I’ve read (throughout this forum) that many of the top schools (ivy league) require you to take SAT II’s on writting and math… if this is true… what is that about?.. I thought that’s what the SAT I’s were for…

The SAT2 in writing has been eliminated replaced by the NEW SAT.

then what happens to people who take the ACT ? does that mean they have to take the entire new SAT I instead of just a writing subject SAT II ?

the ACT has a writing test too for colleges that may accept that as well...

http://www.act.org/aap/writing/index.html

New SAT and 2 SATs will be required by most schools starting next year..

The two required SAT IIs are usually =

Engineering: Math IIC, (Chem or Phys)
Biology: Math IIC, (Chem or Bio)
History: Math IIC, (US Hist or World Hist)

etc.. Math IIC is pretty much required everywhere where they want SAT IIs..

the people who take the ACT can take just the ACT plus writing.

Either Math IC or IIC is fine...depending on the college. (IIC is not required for UC.) SAT II Writing, already mentioned above, is replaced by the new SAT I. The Math IC/IIC contains material that is much more difficult than the math content in the SAT I. Math in SAT I has more to do with logic whereas the SAT II Math IC/IIC actually tests knowledge of mathematics taught in school.

I know this is stupid.. but can you take some of your SAT II in your senior year like you can with the SAT I's?

yeah you can...

would a combination of math IIC, literature and french listening be okay?

Thanks, now.. how would this look:

SAT II's = Math, Science (Chem), Foreign Language (Spanish)...

What "match" for college would that bring you.. I dont mean specific college but just what type of college in general... guided more towards science correct?

marina_b: It depends on what you want to show the college and major in. I believe they see all of your scores anyway. According to your list, it looks like you're geared toward the arts/humanities, rather than math/science. And if it's a UC school, it's mandatory to send Math, Writing, and one of your choice.

theonekid: More towards science.

a Math, a Science, a Foreign Language, an a history would be very good to take...
IF you are going into Liberal Arts or English majors, also take SAT II: Literature.. It will only help you!

math II (renamed from IIc) is usually required/highly recommended for any top science (CalTech, MIT) or engineering school.

Will the UC's still require BOTH Math and Writting next year?

onekid:

no, the SATII Writing has been discontinued since that has been consolidated into the new SAT. Math is no longer required. But, the two SATII's that you do submit must be from different disciplines, i.e, you can't just submit two science SATII's.

Examination Requirement

All students applying for fall 2006 or later must submit the following test scores:

* The SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT Assessment plus Writing.
The verbal, writing and mathematics scores on the SAT must be from the same sitting. If you take the ACT, you must report your composite score.
* Two SAT Subject Tests
These must be in two different subject areas of the students choice, including Mathematics Level 2, English literature, foreign language, science or history/social studies.
