SAT II's

Because of the new March SAT, is it still necessary to take the SAT II writing?

And... is it necessary to take the SAT II's? If so, which ones are preferable and how many?

I don't have to take the SAT, but I think if you go on to fastweb or the SAT site it tells you. I remember seeing it somewhere.

No, don't take the Writing, as it is included in the New SAT and will no longer be offered as an SAT II. You will have to take 2 to 3 others, depending on the school. Usually, you will want one of these to be the IIc.

IIc? What is that?

Math level 2 = Math IIC

Should I only take Math IIC?

depends how strong you are in math. if you have at least a b in precalc or some equivalent of pre-calc, you should do fine on the IIC. The tests covers more advanced material than IC and has a more generous curve.

Some schools require SATIIs, some don't. The ones that require them will tell you if they want you to take any specific ones, otherwise, you can choose whichever ones you want.

Don't only take Math IIC... that would make no sense, seeing as the schools that want SATIIs usually want at least three. If you're great at math and are applying as a math/science/engineering major, take the IIC and do well. If you're applying for any sort of humanities major, take the IC.

The "preferable" SATIIs depend on whatever you are applying to major in. If you want to be a science/math/engineering major, the tests you take should fall under the "Math" and "Science" categories. If you are applying for a major within the humanities, you should take tests within the "History and Social Studies," "English," or "Languages" categories.

i don't get it, what's the harm in bdreamm taking the math IIC if s/he happens to be good at math, but also wants to major in humanities? wouldn't a relatively high score on the IIC look more impressive? but i agree that bdr should go with the topics that feel s/he feels comfortable with and confident in.

bdreamm just seemed a little confused as to which SATIIs to take and which ones are preferable, so I attempted giving examples. I didn't mean to imply that bdreamm shouldn't take the IIC at all no matter what if he/she wants to major in humanities. Sorry if I confused anyone. If you're going to do well on, say, World History but you're applying for a bio major, definitely take the World History, but also don't forget about the science and math tests.

Thank you all for responding.

How long in advance should you prep for the SAT II's?

Depends how familiar you are with the subject.

Many of them (for example, US History, Bio, Chem...) will be a breeze if you take them directly after your AP exams in the same subject. Very little extra studying is necessary because the AP exams are generally more comprehensive than the SATIIs.

On the other hand, if you're trying to self-study an SATII (I don't know why you would, but...), it may be a little bit tougher. Put in a few diligent months with your prep books and you should be fine.

I took AP US History last year...

Do you know how hard it is compared to the SAT II?

bdreamm, the SAT II Writing doesn't exist as soon as the first new SAT happens - the new writing section in the new SAT replaces the SAT II Writing.
