SAT in sophomore year

Is testing during the beginning or end of sophomore year wise?

SAT IIs in the end of sophomore year is wise but not SAT I. Do SAT IIs only in courses that have prepared you well for the subject, like APs. SAT I should be taken in March of junior year.

Is there no benefit in taking the SAT during sophomore year, such as more time for other tests in junior year? Also, why is it specifically inefficient to take the test in 10th grade?

I guess I'm anticipating a rigorous workload in my junior year that will leave little time for SAT prepping. Also, I just wanted to know if there are specific reasons for testing in 11th grade. Do people want to gain vocabulary or what? I'm aware that the SAT is not a curriculum test, which means whatever I learn in junior year will probably have little effect on my results.

My daughter took the SAT at the end of her sophomore year to get an idea of what areas she needed to work on.

Most students will take the SAT in the spring of their junior year so they will have time to retake if necessary and to allow time to take SAT2s.

No matter what you think (and i'm sure you think you're smart now), your reasoning and metal ability certainly increases from the beginning of soph to the end of Jr year...enough to have a few hundred point influence on your score.

Wow, I didn't realize that could be true, several hundred points in a year but look at my progression.
7th Grade:
M:520
V:510
T:1030

9th Grade
M:570
V:570
T:1140

10th Grade
M:690
Cr:660
W:630
T:1980

9th Grade:
SAT
M: 800
V: 660

10th Grade
SAT 2
Math: 800
Physics: 800
Chemistry: 800

satIIs u take whenever, i took SAT sophomore year (800m 690CR 730w=2220) and i am keeping it, i did it because im in "advanced math" or w/e so i didnt want to forget the easy stuff thats on the sat (i know, bad reason, but w/e)

I would do it in my junior year simply because you learn more vocabulary and critical reading skills.

"No matter what you think (and i'm sure you think you're smart now), your reasoning and metal ability certainly increases from the beginning of soph to the end of Jr year...enough to have a few hundred point influence on your score."

I didn't want to appear pretentious or anything of the sort. I was just wondering if getting the SAT out of the way early was beneficial.

Do a lot of people experience that peaking in points after junior year?

Most student (but not all) improve over time. Senior year scores tend to be higher than Junior year scores which tend to be higher than Sophomore year scores. You have simply read more, built your vocabulary more and seen more diverse math problems.

That said, if you can nail the SAT in your sophomore year, why the heck not? Just keep in mind that almost everyone who takes the test in 10th grade ends up retaking it in 11th and 12th. You'd have to be a rather exceptional test taker to really make the sophomore year test your last.

I didn't realize that statistic. I guess it is reasonable to say that testing in the junior year is safer. But don't people become constricted because of AP testing?

Sure. You have to really juggle a lot of things Junior and Senior year. But most people still become better test takers. Testing in 11th and 12th is a hassle, but usually pays off.

I took the SAT in March of my sophomore year. I wanted to take it early to figure out what my abilities were without any prep, so that I would know how much to study for next year. For me it was incredibly beneficial, because it took some of the mystery out of the test and taught me what to expect in the future. I do intend to retake it junior year, and I'll actually study for that one. ;)

(740CR + 720W + 660M = 2120)

I would wite till junior yr to stress out abt sat's and relax now. time comes with knowledge. To want the best you must waite!

I suppose the general consensus is: SAT IIs in sophomore, SAT I in Junior

lilchipmunk: Actually, I feel more relaxed having already taken it than I would otherwise. Familiarity tends to reduce the nervousness.

thisyearsgirl: Better scores stay lifelong then a year if relaxation.

took sat's as a sophomore and scored 2230, probably will take them 1 more time
