SAT January 2012 - Critical Reading

<p>Did everyone have the passage about technology and music with stuff about John Philip Sousa? or was that experimental?</p>

<p>Wow, when we took the psat on october 11 some dudes posted high quality threads right away. Whats wrong w/ the guys today. The only guy I saw even trying to make one was “sat100.” Dudes w8 for a few mins. I’ll make one. I organized almost all the questions into each passages (for words only the ones that I considered hard). Help me complete the thread.</p>

<p>Update on farmers: I found the source, but can’t get access to it unfortunately, it seems to be some kind of science article. Here is the link: [Did</a> Plaster Hold Neolithic Society Together?](<a href=“http://www.sciencemag.org/content/294/5550/2278.citation]Did”>http://www.sciencemag.org/content/294/5550/2278.citation)</p>

<p>@idskyscraper: Yes, we are extremely lazy :stuck_out_tongue:
Here is the sc:
voluptuous
captivated
aloof and proud
quackery and forestall
inclusive…selection
prescient
adroit…erudition
obdurate
ruminate
meticulous, aberrant
docile
unique
cathartic
exaggerated
output, diverse
accidental, favorable
transcribed</p>

<p>inclusive… selection was about writing an autobiography.</p>

<p>I was pretty sure that the correct answer was (((something…relevance)))</p>

<p>Meaning they should cover everything and not pick and choose what is relevant</p>

<p>and when you have voluptuous, you mean UNDERSCORED, not highlighted</p>

<p>EDIT… possibly [[[forbearance…relevance]]] can anyone back this up?</p>

<p>@Arobins:
What you are thinking of is forthright…relevance</p>

<p>I still believe standardization for traffic problem. it contrasts with the later portion that asserts that Moroccan roads and Montana Roads look the same now.</p>

<p>Also, why wasn’t [[forthright…relevance]] correct for the biography one? A lot of people are saying it was [[inclusive…selection]]. Maybe I have questions mixed up also.</p>

<p>ALSO::: Should we really be discussing these?</p>

<p>oh boy…for the forthright/relevance question, i put comprehensive/drudgery. as in, biographers should take a comprehensive look at every detail of a person’s life instead of just the “drudgery”</p>

<p>Word (Q 1~8)
5. Transcribe
8. Prescient</p>

<p>Blog (Q 9~10)
9. What do strangers refer to? Random readers
10. Criticized on advanced technology / Commented on contemporary</p>

<p>Farm (Q 11~12)
11. Discovery that can discredit the opinion? Trading (I don’t think it is neighbor)
12. Scientific proof? Finding evidence that they cultivated distant farms (many say that the answer choice that had the word “neighbor” was in Q11, but I think it was this one that had one of the answer choices having the phrase “trading with neighboring villages.” I think this is not the answer because neighboring villages are likely to be “near.” We need to find prove that they could have “distant” farms)</p>

<p>Photography (Q 13~24)
13. Technical skills are less important that something
14. What does “course” refer to? Progression
15. What does “rides” refer to? Depends
16. Can be powerful if good person uses
17. Deal (solve) dissatisfaction
18. What does “history” refer to? Future social changes
19. To catch subtle evidence of attitude
20. Distort the subject
21. Objection to stories
22. Philosophy / Methodology
23. To persuade skeptical readers who do not believe injustices do exist
24. The assumption that authors of both passage make is?</p>

<p>As you can see I don’t have an answer for Q 24, and of course some of the answers are controversial. Thanks.</p>

<p>Does anyone remember the name of the author of passage 2 about photography? It was an excerpt from an autobiography, so we should be able to pull it up easily if we can get a name.</p>

<p>is the distort the subject question (20) the one where it asked what question author 2 would add to the list of questions of author 1’s?</p>

<p>are you positive about the photography answers?</p>

<p>if so, its not looking good</p>

<p>esp. 13, 16, 17, 21</p>

<p>[[DOES ANYONE REMEMBER OTHER CHOICES FOR THESE?]]</p>

<p>^ i agree, about 4 of my answers are different and i was fairly confident on this passage</p>

<p>To put an end to the job analogy for the photography passage. The referenced like for that passage contained this information (pulled straight from the book):
“…Eno, who became a global celebrity of the sorts, boating off to Paris and Sao Paulo to solve traffic problems…”</p>

<p>This should settle the debate. The answer is clearly the recycle guy who is asked to hold workshops. Eno was a GLOBAL celebrity, and he went to different countries because his skills were needed/valued.</p>

<p>can someone explain why the sc was “inclusive/selection” and not “comprehensive/drudgery”</p>

<p>Let me see here:
13. I vaguely remember this one. Was this that emotion/ability to understand surroundings was more important than technical skills? Something along those lines. That should be correct.
16. This I think is correct as well (If right person uses it they can bring about change/etc).
17. This one was definitely correct.
21. Was this the criticism one? If that is the case the answer should have been something with regards to his previous criticism.</p>

<p>13 and 21 are correct for sure. I’m not sure what the questions are for 16 and 17.</p>

<p>I believe the assumption that both make is that people should be aware of social injustices.</p>

<p>What were the questions for 13, 17, 21???</p>

<p>I remember one of the book writers was cadwell. I wish this did a great help. If you search fo Cadwell I’m pretty sure you can also get the photographers name easily.</p>

<p>I’ll post 2/3 of the thread.</p>

14. Content / ambivalent</p>

<p>Biological Clock (Q 15~24)
15. What’s the purpose of the article? To introduce a phenomenon and (re)solutions / To introduce a theory and ways of testing it (I personally chose the latter one because I couldn’t find any (re)solutions. As a matter of fact, ways of testing it make more sense since they did experiments to find out that our internal clock is actually 25 hours and not 24 hours. Also all the things regarding going in to a light isolated cave for months and etc).
16. What does the word “work” mean? Operate
17. What does the phrase “If the legend can be believed” do? Qualify a sentence
18. What does the phrase “Found at 1917, and more thoroughly examined half century later” indicate? To describe the finding of the biological clock (I know many will think this as controversial, but I think this is right. I’ve seen some say that it’s to give scientific evidence or something but isn’t too vague to say that this verifies its validity. Rather I think it is just objectively providing information regarding its finding).
19. How independent is our internal clock from external influences. (The question was relevant to the word “autonomous”).
20. In which of the following cases might the additional time accumulate? Isolation of light and sound
21. Objective & Instructive
22.

<p>Unfortunately, I can’t think of the last three lol. Help Me :)</p>
