Hello,

Does anyone have any tips? I have PWN the SAT Math which I will begin reading and am thinking of doing a practice section every other day from here until the October test date. Does anyone have any tips? Or any formulas/programs I should put in my calculator? Please let me know.

Thanks,

Make sure you go over problems you missed (were they silly mistakes or weaknesses in the topic?). If most of the problems you miss are due to silly mistakes, you may want to slow down and be more organized with your work.

A basic knowledge of combinatorics and number theory, e.g. definition of permutation, combination, modulo, congruences can be quite helpful on a few problems, even though they’re never required.

I didn’t put in any calculator programs (other than the ones already built-in) and got 800. None of the questions require a calculator, and I suggest only using a calculator to check work (e.g. arithmetic).

Try taking some practice tests without a calculator. That way, you’ll learn not to over-rely on it when it comes time for the real test.

I used Dr Chung’s Sat Math II book. If you read any of the older threads, many people like it. I used that and Barron’s and received high 700s. Dr. Chung’s tips in the books are really good and easy to remember. good luck

My sophomore got a 740. He did no outside review or prep. He just completed Honors Functions w Calc A. He rarely studies but does his homework. My 8th grader got a 690. She just finished Honors Algebra 2. She did not do any SAT prep either. In our experience, making the most of each math course is a pretty good strategy. You may be aiming higher than a 690, but she’s only in 8th grade…

xiggi also has a lot of useful prep advice. If you haven’t already come across it, do a search in this forum and you’ll find lots.

@MITer94 Typically I make one or two mistakes per section and it’s an even split between silly mistakes and weakness in the content. I’ll look into all the math terms you posted thank you very much.

@grandscheme I’ve read Xiggi’s guide but will consider rereading the math and writing section before the test since it was truly helpful.
