From my understanding Math II is clearly much more difficult than math I, but Math has never been my strong subject, it was my lowest score on the ACT (Composite 35, Math 33) and is the class I actually have to try in (I'm in IB SL math, aka pre-calc/calc ab right now). I think that I can do pretty well on the Math I section, but am not sure about Math II. Would you recommend sticking with Math I or going for Math II? Does it make a noticeable difference to universities? Thanks!

mmm I’d say Math II… it has a more forgiving curve. It also covers precalc stuff you’re learning now Math I is basically the equivalent of SAT Math so colleges prefer Math II more. Try taking a practice test for each and see how you do.

It also depends on where you’re applying to college and which major. For engineering, Math 2.

Oh, but if you’re looking at non-engineering, Math 1 should be fine. In fact, some colleges don’t even require SAT 2’s anymore.

I’m currently undecided on my college major, but it will likely either be in the sciences or in business. With that in mind, would you agree that most prestigious universities would prefer math II over math I, regardless of curricular grades and an ACT math score?

Yes definitely Math II over Math I. The curve is much more generous, so you might end up doing better anyway on the Math II.

I’d check the schools you’re applying to. Some of them don’t require subject tests if you take the ACT with Writing. That being said, if you’re looking to be an engineer, definitely take Math II.
