I'm about to take the SAT Math Subject-Test in May. If I'm applying to a good college and I can show up with an 800 in Level 2 and a 740/760 in Level 1 which one would you send in your application (most colleges accept only scores from one...)?

For me the only challenge with Level 1 is time. I took it in January and time was up when I still had 5 questions left. Level 2 isn't much harder for me and if I answer only 45 questions I still have an 800.

I've heard that most colleges prefer scores from Level 1. Is it the same for very good colleges, too?

Where have you heard that colleges prefer Math Level 1 to Math Level 2? Doesn’t that strike you as counter-intuitive? The reason for an applicant to take Math Level 1 rather than 2 is because he’s missing the foundation for Math Level 2. Since you have that foundation it’s a plus. Show it off and take Math Level 2. The Math Level 2 “curve” is not the issue. It’s simply an indication that the test pool is at a higher skill level than for some of the other subject tests.

I’ve read in several forums that an 800 in Level 1 makes a better impression than an 800 in Level 2 (since you have to have every single question correct). But thanks for encouraging me to take the Level 2 SAT anyway - I think I’m def. going for this one now…

What is the HS course that typically precedes SAT math level 2? What math do you need to know? And if that class is about a year in your past, will you likely have forgotten the material or is it basic to the later topics? (s is telling me he can’t take a math subject test now bc it’s all in the past…)

Take Math 2. Math 1 is seen as a joke by ad coms anyway.
Math 1 - algebra, geometry (with plane geometry), alegbra 2, and trig
Math 2 - algebra, geometry (no plane geometry), alegbra 2, trig, and Precalculus

Math 2 has a much better curve as well. 6 wrong in Math 2 is an 800, while 6 wrong in Math 1 is a 720
