I just got back my PSAT scores, and I was a little dissappointed to say the least (1900) If this is how I preform on the real thing (God forbid), I was wondering if that would really lower me in admissions ratings. Im taking all of the hardest classes offered (AP Calc as a junior), and have a 4.0 on a 4.3 (uw) I have about 150 C.S. hours, with a habitat for humanity trip planned for this summer. I was class treasurer both 9 and 10 grade and now am a prefect at a private school (to which I have a full scholarship) I participate in a lot of clubs, including Ballroom Dancing (the best time ever!), Debate, Key Club, SADD, and FCA (which i am a captain), I starred in the school play freshman year, and this year I was 'lighting technician' and I start in Varsity field hockey. I've been nominated for NYLC, NSLC, NLC (etc...) Would a 1900 or 2000 SAT pull me down all that much? I guess I just dont test well...

With a 4.0 I think you should be fine but try to raise it, I guess. I have a related question: how might Davidson view the opposite situation: I have 2200ish and about a 3.4 with good ecs and recs.

DD is applying to Davidson. Her SATs are not her strong point (650math, 580 verbal, 650 writing), but her class rank is top 5% and her GPA is 3.87. She has excellent ECs (strong commitment to music, with state ranking as an oboe/English horn player), and four year swim team member (not competitive in Div. 1, but strong commitment none the less). Recommendations were excellent, with strong course load including two APs and a dual Community college credit/hs credit course in Anatomy/Physiology this year. She already has a five on the AP course she took last year. She loved Davidson...knows it is a HUGE reach...HUGE. But as she said...she won't "break" if she doesn't get accepted.

Well I was just admitted ED this year, but i remember talking to the admissions counselor for my region about my concerns about my GPA and a few B's (4 all in the same subject) i had on my transcript. He didn't seem to mind the B's so much as long as i kept taking the course (a language) but he got really concerned when i told him about my class rank, 20th percentile, he didn't seem to relax any when he saw that my GPA was a 4.5 and that my class is crazily competitive. So to sum it all up it seems that Davidson thinks very highly of good class ranks, so thumper this may help your daughter... hillibilie, davidson ranks sat's as the least important thing that they look at but i don't know how much they will hurt you. They definately realize that some people aren't good test takers. Also take your PSAT scores with a grain of salt, while many people like myself scored the same on the real SAT as the PSAT, many other scored much higher on the real thing. I found that it really really helps to just take a few practice tests before the real thing, like one math and one verbal section a week for 5 weeks prior to the test. I did this and it ended up raising my scores 60 points (from my first SAT and my PSAT scores which were the same) ending up with a 1480. Davidson looks most highly on the high school course load so i would definately recommend taking as many AP's and you can and as early as possible so that you can fit more into your schedule. If my experience helps any, by the time i graduate i will have 8 AP credits.

Keep in mind that although from an admissions point of view it probably is nice to have the AP credits, you can only apply four AP credits toward your Davidson degree, no matter how many you have earned through the AP tests.

I got a 1910 on the PSAT in the fall of junior year and a 2290 on the SAT in the spring of junior year, so don't worry your score can go up a lot. I didn't take a course or get a tutor or anything, I just bought two books and did all the practice tests. I made a schedule to do around 45 minutes each weeknight and made my parents actually enforce it. I'm a loser I know, but hey I'm going to Pomona next fall, so it paid off. Anyways, good luck with Davidson...great school.

Thats an awesome idea! Im taking it April 1 this year and if i dont do well (meaning below 2100) I'm going to take a course in the summer and take it again in fall. I guess Im really stressing because I have to have some sort of scholarship as well, and i need all the help i can get...
