Hello everyone. I am currently a senior of the high school and i just took my october SAT. I want to apply for university of maryland college park and i want to apply for the regular admission because i want to take november SAT and score higher. However when i check college board website today it says the sat receiever deadline is november 1. So am i allow to take november test now, or it is just the deadline for EA/ED. I am so confusing now, thank u for ur help
i am sorry. Not SAT receiever deadline. It says SAT reasoning report due
I would think not. When the test has been in late October, as long as scores are reported directly to the school, I seem to remember that being ok. However, the testing date is sufficiently past the November 1st priority deadline that I would think that it is not an option for consideration for priority application purposes. Of course, it would be accepted for regular admission, but that’s not worth giving up the chance for merit scholarships or special living learning programs that you would only be eligible for consideration by applying by Nov. 1st. Certainly, you can call the school to confirm, but I highly doubt it.
For the record, I always recommend submitting your app (and making sure all recommendations and other components of the app) are sent in at least a few days before the Nov. 1st deadline to be safe.
Best of luck!
Thank you. So basically you mean that i can still take november sat and send that score to college if i want to apply by regular admission right
Correct, but you really don’t want to apply regular if you can apply priority. You miss too many opportunities - better chance of admission (from what I recall, more than 80% of the freshman class gains admission from priority application deadline), opportunity to be invited to join living/learning communities (honors, scholars, civicus, global communities, etc) and potential for merit money. Even if you hope to get amazing scores from November test, there is ZERO chance for merit money or to be invited to any special communities/programs simply because you would not be eligible as a regular admission applicant. You still have sufficient time to get everything done by Nov 1 deadline, so unless your test scores are completely not in range of the average, there is no reason to not apply priority.
So, is the regular acceptance rate going to do that low (20%)?
No one call tell you exact specifics, but let me explain as best I can. I heard this concept from an admissions rep at the visiting student first info session and tour I went to with my son at Maryland around 5-6 years ago.
The way it was explained is not so much that you have only 20% chance of admission if you apply by regular deadline but rather the majority of students admitted come from applicants that apply by the priority deadline. You need to understand they accept a certain number of students for the incoming freshman class. So, of the number accepted, about 80-85% are selected from those that apply by the priority date.
To try to clarify, as an example, let’s say they want a freshman class of around 1,000 students.
Remember, it’s a numbers game for them just as it is for you. You apply to more than one school, right? So, if you apply to 3 schools, and get admitted to all 3, you will say no to 2 of them.
Maryland understands this and will admit more than 1,000 students because they need to make sure they meet that “yield” goal of 1,000.
So, to make sure they have a better “yield” (percent of admitted students that actually choose to attend), they will want to admit more the students that demonstrate a stronger interest by applying by the priority deadline.
If the bean counters have calculated that they need to admit 3,000 to have a yield of 1,000, they will make around 2,400 of those 3,000 offers to those that apply by priority. So, those that apply by regular deadline are competing for a smaller number of available offers.
I hope that explanation makes sense…?
Thank you so much!
