my SAT reading score on the new SAT is drastically lower than my math, and i dont know what to do. I have had so many SAT classes, and my reading score goes up and down randomly, without indicating where i stand on skill. Any tips for preparation, success stories etc?
math: 770
reading: 660
Hi @nushkis!
Hereās what I find is most helpful for scoring well on the new SAT reading section (to give you background, I missed two questions on the May reading section @-)ā¦not perfect, but not so bad either ;)):
- Refer to AP Language & Composition practice tests! However, do not take practice tests prepared by third-party companiesā¦look for those published by the College Board instead! Unlike finding released SATs on Google (which is very hard to do most of the time), you shouldnāt have any trouble finding AP Lang multiple choice tests. I just searched āap lang pdf multiple choiceā on Google and found a lot of released tests
This has helped me the most!
- If you want to increase your essay score and perhaps score an 8/8/8, refer to AP Language and Comp essay prompts (search specifically for Rhetorical Analysis essays...if you find synthesis and argument essays, they're pretty much irrelevant in this case). Keep in mind that the SAT essay prompts are much simpler than AP Rhetorical Analysis prompts, which tend to be much more archaic and must consequently be really "analyzed" to achieve a perfect 9 on the AP scale. If you practice writing AP essays (and do well), and refer to released AP essays (which tend to be published with their scores), you will find that the SAT essay portion will be easy for you :)
@AmarAccount Great tips! What did you get on the Reading section as a result of missing 2?
@staticjava
I believe I got 10 points off for each question missed :((
The curve was not as forgiving as my friends and I hoped it would be!
Edit: I did, however, score 8/8/8 on the essay portion; although the way it is scored is extremely subjective, in my opinion (as any essay scoring is, but especially this one, since itās only scored by 2 people), I strongly urge everyone to refer to old AP Lang prompts in order to achieve a perfect essay score
Itās definitely feasible ā just donāt be discouraged by the May SATās seemingly harsh essay grading!
@AmarAccount thanks! i took AP lang last year so ive had a lot of practice with AP multiple choice but i never consciously studied it. Great tips!!
