My teacher told us a few days ago that the a certain SAT score was required to "confirm" national merit semifinalists to become finalists but he said that there wasn't a set score that can do this. Does anyone know more information about this or data about past SAT confirmation scores?

Actually if you search on CC you can find these postings year by year. It is different for each state and calculated each year based on that particular group of students who took the test. Just search for NMSF qualifying scores 2009 (or 2008, et). You can even try google which most of the time brings you back to a CC page.

Squiggles: He was asking about the SAT score required in the NMSF application to advance to finalist.

As for your question, 2000+ is the general rule (where it will not prevent your advancing to finalist status); however, scores in the 1900s occasionally will pass the requirement.

In a thread in the NMS forum, a poster indicates s/he was told in a direct conversation with NMSC that “confirming” score is 1960. This corresponds closely to what I have seen posted over the last few years.

Does the confirming score have to be taken AFTER the PSAT? Can one use aa SAT score taken beforethe PSAT? For example if a student scores 2190 on the October 9 SAT and then scores a 219 on the October 13th PSAT, dos that student have to take another SAT to confirm the PSAT?
