SAT student taking the ACT

So I've never really seriously considered taking the ACT until recently. Having focused on the SAT Reasoning and Subject tests for most of my high school career, I have no idea what I'm getting myself into.

Can someone describe the basics of the ACT (I've already read through their general description on the website), how many questions you can get wrong for a 36 and 30, the best test-prep book(s), etc.

It'll really help me out a lot. Thanks in advance!

Just for the record, I received a 2310 on the SAT with the following breakdown:

CR 800
Math 760
Writing 750, 11

What scores can I expect on the ACT?

The ACT and SAT are pretty similar, IMO. The main difference is that the ACT time limits are a bit stricter, and there's a science section. You have a great SAT score, I think you could easily get a 35-36 on the ACT without preparing, assuming you're good with time limits and at least decent at science. Most people I know do better on the ACT than the SAT, comparatively. I have a 34 ACT, but a 2130 SAT, so it's definitely true for me.

If you did that well on the SAT, you can definitely get a 32+ on the ACT.

I believe the ACT is 4 sections, and the optional writing, which is highly recommended to take. English, Math, Science, and Reading. Many schools that require the SAT IIs IF you take the SAT I, will not require you to take anything additional, if you submit the ACT. Just the optional writing section. There are a few schools that will require SAT IIs even if you submit the ACT. May I ask, though, why are you considering taking the ACT? Your current SAT score is terrific.

BTW, my D took both and her scores were:
SAT I: 2280 (800 CR, 750 M, 730 W.) SAT IIs-- 770 (Eng lit), 730 (M 1), 670 (Fr w/list)
ACT: 34 composite

That correlated pretty well.

Just wanted to brag a little ! :)

your SAT score is great, so I assume you could do the same on your ACT as well

Ykim, going off of my score report from December

(Score at left, Number wrong at right)
English:
36 - 0
35 - 1-2
34 - 3
33 - 4
32 - 5
..
25 - 15-16

Math:
36 - 0-1
35 - 2
34 - 3-4
33 - 5
32 - 6-7
..
25 - 19-21

Reading:
36 - 0
35 - 1-2
34 - 3
33 - 4
32 - 5
..
25 - 13

Science:
36 - 0
35 - 1
34 - 2
33 - 3
32 - 4
..
25 - 11-12

The scoring varies from test to test, but from my knowledge, this is a pretty typical distribution.

Hope this helps! good luck!

why would you take the act when your sat score is decent?

?

With a score like that, you should hope for a 36 composite. It's not hard. I got average (for here) scores on my SAT (2180) and got a 34 ACT with no prep, just because I wanted to change things up and take a different test for once. (I know, I like to live life on the edge)

Why would you want to take the ACT with a 2310? o_O

thanks for your help everyone!

for those of you guys who are wondering why i'm taking the act, it's because someone suggested that taking both the sat and act would be better (but not necessary of course), than just taking just one.

since i'm pretty much done with sat reasoning and subject testing, i figured, why not? it's not like i'm going to take that much time to study anyways.

again, thanks for your help!
