I took the SAT Subject Test in Math 1 in January and recently got my scores back. I received a 730 on it, which is the 86th percentile. I’m kind of unsure about whether or not to retake this. My reach school is an Ivy, and I know the admissions process is extremely rigorous. But, I also know that the process extends beyond standardized testing.
So, I guess my question would be - is 730 a good enough score for a top-tier school? It was only after I took the test that I realized Math 1 has one of the harshest grading curves. I remember omitting 6 questions on the exam, but I think every question I did answer was correct. How would my score appear to higher-level schools? Do colleges care about percentiles? Is it really necessary to retake this?
Thanks to anyone who responds. I guess some background about me would be useful. I am ranked 1st in my class currently, and last time I checked, my overall average was a 99 on a 100 point scale. I do well on standardized tests, but I know I am not one who will necessarily walk away with an 800 on every single SAT I take. There’s no way; pressure like that makes me kind of nervous. I don’t really know what colleges look for in terms of SAT Subject Tests, so if anyone can help me, I would appreciate it!
730 on Math I is a good score, no doubt. What major are you aiming for ? In any case I think you should spend your time on something else. Like other subject tests related to your major.
Thank you, meriks! I am really torn actually. I want to major in either Biochemistry or Political Science - two completely different paths. What would you recommend?
If you go for Biochemistry you should do a chemistry subject test, and for political science you could do US/World history. Whether you decide to do biochemistry or political science is up to you, no one can decide for you. I wouldn’t recommend retaking Math I in this case because the curve is very harsh. So at best you get an 800 with a perfect score, but it’s really hard. So even if you make progress you might end up with a 770 and it isn’t worth your time.
The other thing is that Math 2 is generally more valued than Math 1 but both cannot be accepted, so you can only send one of the two to colleges. If you feel you can get an 800 math level 2 then it might be worth doing it and sending it instead of the Math level 1. But since you’re not going for hardcore math major, Math 1 is fine imo.
I think High scores in very different subject tests look very good on an application.
