Hello, lovely world of College Confidential members! I am hoping you might be able to help me with an SAT Subject test-related conundrum.

I took four SAT Subject Tests, and I scored pretty well overall. I got an 800 on U.S. History, 790 on Literature, and 800 on Math 1. However, I got a 770 on the Math 2 test. The percentile for a 770 on the Math 2 is in the 70s.

So, my question is whether or not the Math 2 subject test score would be worth submitting to colleges when I apply. I do not plan on majoring in STEM fields, but I have taken relatively advanced math classes in high school (which is why I took the Math 2, hoping that if I did well on it, I could demonstrate that I learned from those classes). I also am looking to cast my Math section score from the SAT itself in a better light, as I scored a 770. Would submitting that relatively poor Math 2 score make me look like an inadequate math student, or would submitting the Math 1 when I have taken classes that should have prepared me for the former test make me look lazy?

If you’re not doing engineering (and often times even when you are) you don’t necessarily need Math Level II grades. You’re math Level I grades will more than suffice! Even though, your math level II score is still great. Colleges know that the percentile is highly skewed, because there are so many students who are incredibly strong in math. Don’t retake, and I’d even recommend sending your math II score in (although you definitely don’t have to!)

The Math 1 curve is actual tougher than the Math 2 curve, so an 800 on Math 1 looks pretty good. As for the 770 on Math 2 being in the 70th percentile, that is due to the fact that this test is typically taken by students who have advanced quite far into their math curriculum. An 800 is actually 83rd percentile for Math 2, so your percentile won’t improve that much and the difference is probably just 2-3 questions tops anyways. Just submit everything - a 770 is still a great score, especially for someone who’s not looking into STEM fields.

Don’t worry, just submit them all. Some schools would prefer Math2 no matter what is your intended major (e.g. Stanford). The schools would pick the best scores they want. You have two 800 and that is great.
