Hello CC,
As the AP examinations for 2015 have begun, my curiosity has been tickled:
Is it possible to self-report SAT Subject Test scores pertaining/related to the AP courses one has taken rather than their AP Examination scores? I ask, because AP exams are generally used to determine placement within college classes, and SAT scores are used more in the admissions process. Do adcoms have a preference over either of the scores? Would it hypothetically be alright if I chose not to report my AP exam scores, and instead ~ 4 SAT Subject Test scores?
Thank You!
Wayward Vagabond.
If you have both, why not report both? Why do you have to choose one?
Also keep in mind that the SAT IIs have a much less forgiving curve than AP exams.
Hi bodangles! This is because I am planning to take 4 SAT Subject Tests, and also have to self-report IELTS scores as I am an international student. I do believe I may use the other 3 spaces on the CommonApp to report my AP scores if I have no other appropriate testing scores, but I am instilled with trepidation and anxiety for two of my AP exams, as I may not do well in them, even when considering the curve.
Hi!
If you do well on the SATs and not so well on the AP exams, you’re right, it would probably be in your best interest to report the best ones. If you do well on both, of course, you can always send both.
(Is there really a limit to the slots? It’s been a year for me so I don’t recall, but I see people on these boards with tons of both Subject Tests and AP scores, and haven’t heard anything about not being able to report them all.)
Well, if a college requires Subject Tests, preference does not really come into play; you send what they ask for.
Self-reporting anything is voluntary. Again, if the college requires Subject Tests, you do not need to self-report, but you do need to send the official scores. AP scores, for the vast majority of US universities, carries little to no weight in the admissions process.
I GOT BUMPED BY SKIEUROPE WOAH WOAH WOAH!!!
Thank you very much, Ski! It was an honor to have your help here. It has set my apprehensions to rest.
And bodangles, I have made a temporary CommonApp account to stifle my curiosity (and to begin early on the admissions process), although I am unable to tell whether or not there is a limit to self-reported scores… If I find any information on it, I will have you know.
I did think we had 8 spaces to self-report scores, though.
I believe I may be wrong.
There are schools that use SAT2 scores for placement also. A few schools would actually use SAT2 scores in place of SAT1/ACT for admission. For AP score, you only need to self-report the score(s) if you want to. Official score reports are likely sent to the registrar instead of admission office anyway. Most schools would offer credit to AP scores of 4 or 5 but many have restriction on the subject and/or credits. There are not many school that offer credits from SAT2 scores. When a school requires SAT2, they only need 2 (3 for certain programs). You may submit additional SAT2 scores but it carry as little weight as AP scores. If you have multiple SAT2 scores, choose the better ones or the those required subjects for submission would be sufficient. For STEM, you would likely need Math2 and a science. For others, you may want to have scores from 2 different cores.
Wayward Vagabond, you can modify/edit a post to add a line or two, by clicking on the little “wheel” at the top/right corner of your post, just below the number.
Most schools require official score reports if you send in SAT II scores (just like SAT 1 and ACT). They won’t just take your word for it. Send in your official report for the SATs (you can send one report that contains all your SAT I and SAT II scores) and then self report your AP scores.
Thank you all for your help!
