sat subject tests "recommendation"

while i was reading through the standardized testing requirements for stanford online, i thought it interesting to note that stanford only recommends sat subject tests, unlike many other selective colleges that require them.

in your opinion, what range of scores in sat subject tests is worth sending to the admissions committee? would any low scores actually hurt your application (compared to schools that do require subject tests)?

I think in general a 700+ is a decent score...take Math II since they highly recommend that, and maybe another science accompanied with a non-science one (US, Lit, languages etc) -- and also every test you take will be shown to the committee once you send your scores, so you won't be able to select scores and stuff...and no, one low score on any one test will not hurt your application devastatingly (I got a 690 in physics, and ended up getting an Early Approval letter from Stanford a month before regular decisions came out)

^They don't highly recommend that you take Math 2. What they say is that if you are planning on taking a math subject test, they highly advise taking math 2 over math 1.

Ok what's the difference?

Math I covers up to geometry while Math II covers up to PreCalc.

As far as I know, Math I is just an extension of the SAT Math section. The curve is extremely hard (one wrong = 790, I think) to make up for the "easy" content. I didn't take Math I, but I think the Math II is way easier than the Math I.
