SAT Subject Tests - Why?

I am sure this question has been asked but I can't find it. Thanks for answering it for me...:)
I haven't seen the subject tests as required on any college websites. What is the purpose? Who looks at them? Is it for merit aid? Admission? Does it replace an AP class/test?
Thank you so much!

The colleges you’re looking at must not be that great then. Pickier colleges need/highly recommend them so they can get a more standardized view of their applicants. For example, Stanford needs to know how well their applicants can take higher level math, and that information is not supplied by the basic SAT I Math, so they need a more standardized look at their applicants.
