SAT tutoring

I know this might be better in the SAT prep forum, but I was looking for parent recommendations. My son is going to start SAT tutoring a neighborhood student and is looking for ideas for prep books.

We have several here from when my kids took the SAT's, but that was a while ago and before the new test. He is looking for a book that has practice problems as well as a couple of complete practice tests. He doesn't mind using more than one book, but he would like to keep the cost down for the parents. What books would you suggest as a necessity and which books would be nice if one wanted extra books or could afford them?

I think he would love to have one key book for the student to purchase and then maybe a few supplemental books for either the student to have or maybe for him to use for practice questions. My son has tutored for a company in the past and has decided to now tutor on his own. He used a book with the company that is available at the local bookstores, but I offered to check here for him as I know many parents here will have terrific suggestions!

Search on Xiggi's method on this forum. He's got a different take that worked well for my kid. Cheap and effective.

Get The Blue Book--"The Official SAT Study Guide" put out by the College Board.
It has 8 full-length practice tests, as well reviews specific to math, reading, vocabulary, writing (grammar and essay). About $20. My D is using it right now. S used it (previous edition) a couple years ago.

This is the only book I would use. You don't need anything else.

Bumping this up for more suggestions.

Get the blue book.

Personally I think parents should just pay their kid to take the tests and go over ALL the answers - even the right ones!

No more suggestions needed. Buy the blue book and call it a day!

For practice tests - the Blue Book. The online College board prep gives additional practice tests too.

For stratagies - Xiggi recommends Maximum SAT and my D thought it was good. He recommends Grubers for the math.

For solutions to the practice tests (the Blue book just tells which answer is correct) - Testmasters Solutions book. It is currently not available on Amazon, so you might have to search around for it.

Look at post #575 on the Xiggi's method thread, his summary of his method is there and lists which books he thinks are good.

if math help is needed, use the Barrons SAT Math workbook. It's really well organized and honestly helped me raise my score by 80 points!! No joke. You need to do all the quizzes atleast 3 times, but after that, you're all set.

Please use old threads for information only, do not post and revive them.

The OP was asking about help for their child in 2007, it is highly likely that they have graduated from college by now.
